We got one down on the river and they used fiberglas barge covers for the roof after the flood i,ll try and get some pics

  5. That a step up from having a "van down by the river" ?

Really using a couple to build a shop isn't a bad idea, they're cheap enough to buy.

Yeah, it is a step-up, but not a big one.

I am typing this from the inside of a 40' container right now. Half is parts storage, and the other half has insulation, sheet rock, heat/ac, full wiring, interwebs, and even a window. It is currently inside the warehouse where my shop is.

It is forklift-able and trailer truck haul-able. It has been move once, across town.

I've seen one used as a gunsmith's shop and have seen a couple used as garages when guys had a car that needed to be kept inside and didn't have a garage. Tight fit though.
[IMG][IMG]They even convert them to farm worker housing up here with a regular door and windows. They hold up a lot better than mobile homes and are usually less expensive.
Somewhere I've seen a photo of two of them set far enough apart so that you could park two cars between them and they had a roof built over them. Storage area on one side, workshop area on the other and room in the middle to work on the cars. I'm not sure that in the long run that setup would be any less expensive than a similar sized pole building though.

I'd just like to have one as a workshop and tool and equipment storage so that I could get a car in my little one car garage when I wanted to.

But being 'portable and temporary', it wouldn't be taxable or subject to code... hehehe

Was going to do this in TX, before I moved back north. Had all the free old pipe and galvanized corrugated tin I would need to make trusses, the roof, and a door. Containers were damn cheap too with the Port of Houston just up the road. Damn Ike...

Not a very practical solution in PA

Heck, around here some people might actually consider a shipping container a place to live in !!!!

There's a local TV news reporter here in Houston and she and her husband had a house made from them. If you think about it, the structural integrity is pretty good.

Think.... 4 or 5 attached together and insulated... could be a nice, strong structure.

If you use one for storage, especially in a hot and humid climate you must put in some type of ventilation. I have one and it sweats like crazy inside. Every thing inside rusted in a short time. I heard of a Corvette that someone had stored in one and the frame about rusted away. Other than that, they are great.

  16. I have one ,it was my workshop for a while now I use it for storage. If you don't build a roof above it they sweat real bad. I have a friend that has 3 setup makes a killer shop. l_l

    a container house...

3 photos - I saw this house on the hgtv show extreme homes.

It is a pretty neat use of containers.

I suppose a shop could be built in the middle, with storage on the ends.

    Like building legos...

Over here in Thailand they have a whole bunch of them in one place like a trailer park even some two stories high. They have all been converted to housing with a/c, plumbing and the whole bit and people here love them as it's cheaper than trying to rent or build a house. They actually look pretty good.

Heard from a guy in the UK, him and his crew built their clubhouse / shop by welding a couple - three of them together. Room enough for all their tools, a poker table, small fridge, and a car or two.

Probably not very pretty but he claims it works really well.

My wife and I are moving forward with our shipping container house and hope to get started soon, I was concerned about the building codes but the township building inspector told me as long as it p***ed the local codes I could build a house out of whatever I wanted. I found youtube to have loads of video's

  24. I encourage anyone to try alternative ideas when building. Just as with our strawbale house you want to strive to be BETTER than code. Remeber, code is just a p***ing grade, the lowest accepted standard ;)

I am looking at the container idea for our dirty bay behind our exhisting place.

I have seen them used as ends and back wall. Placed in a U shape on a concrete pad, then trussed and roofed over. Ending up with three securable storage or office shop space areas, and and open center bay for general work.

Also have seen people by 16 to 20 foot truck boxes put them on pads complete with the roll up door.
