I have a chance to buy a mildly running (starts but been parked since who knows) 70 something complete Chevy truck with motor and ****** for $250. I'll probably talk em down on the price though. My question was what parts should I keep off it that would be useful for projects later? I don't plan on restoring this truck and will be taking what I don't use to the s**** yard. I don't have any projects right now, but I'm hustling for funds as we speak. Any suggestions what-so-ever are welcomed. Just would like to know if I should even waste my time on it. Thanks!
What power train (engine/trans/rear end) Useful parts depend greatly on what you would end up building.
350? part it out on ebay you'll at least double your money at 250 i would think. Question is a little confusing though. other than the engine what would you use on future projects that pretain to H.A.M.B. vehicles? those trucks are a dime a dozen IMO, HELL I HAVE ONE
350/350 not sure bout the rear end. I'm undecided on what direction to take on a project. Right now just working at Firestone getting experience working on cars and checking out Car Kulture Deluxe mags. I been going to a lot of car shows lately too....
Whatever you do stay away from the rat rods and never use that term (ratrod) on this site after this posting! Trust me.
haha yeah you can find these trucks in a lot of backyards here in San Antonio. I been collecting s**** and doing odd jobs to s****e some cash for a car. I'd like to do this before New Years. Yeah 350. I could keep the block. It'll give me a chance to practice building a chevy small block. I wasn't sure about anything else on the truck, that's why I was asking. I'm not gonna lie. I never built anything before. I'm the FNG.
True! Welcome to the HAMB. Check out the cl***ifieds. There have been alot of cheap, decent projects there.
Look on eBay, save anything you see that sells for enough it's worth your time to pull. Pickups are nice to s**** because they have a bed you can load right up with small ****, fridges, washers, hot water heaters, old brake drums and rotors, whatever -
funny thing. I just recently got a pickup (f250) and as soon as family found out they started calling me to clean yards and haul stuff around. It's been fun.
I try to keep all the parts i think i might be able to use if they are good steering column engine brackets brake pedal ***embly driveshaft even steering box maybe rearend you could even make a pickup box trailer out of it they come in handy you never know what you might need. Believe me if you had it and s****ed it then could use it down the line you will be pissed. later mike
Forget about it. It's junk unless you got a specific need for it. If you want to spend countless hours trying to sell it just to make a few bucks then go ahead. What's your time worth? I did something like this years ago and I got a ticket from the city for having a junk car parked on my property. Don't buy it. My $0.02 worth.
Billy- welcome to the HAMB, and welcome to "the life." Glad to have you here! Most everybody here is more than willing to answer any questions we can, and to help you along your way. Use the search feature for questions before asking- lots of things have been asked before, and this site has a great archive of info. Some guys get a bit touchy about that, plus- if it's been asked before, you won't have to wait for a response to get your answer. But if it doesn't come back with a CLEAR answer- ask away! And welcome- you'll find this is a great place with great people and a TON of great info.
Reminds me of a bumper sticker I recently saw on a pickup: Yes, it's my truck. No, I won't help you move.
well you would get a motor and ****** core. Rear axle might be a little wide for a p***enger car but if your future project is a pickup it could work. Even more so, if your future project is a 60-66 chevy pickup, the front suspension and crossmember can be swapped onto it (giving you disc brakes) fairly easily. If this $250 pickup is a half ton it wont have 8 lug rims (which you probably dont want). It isnt a 4X4, is it?
