Rochester 2 GC carb ??????

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mongo, Mar 6, 2005.

  1. The carb in my 60 Olds really needs to be rebuilt bad. ****o does not do carbs. I have never had any luck with them.I'm just wondering how much of a pain are they to rebuild? Would I be better off buying a new carb, and if so what would be a good replacement carb for my 371.I just want to keep it simple and as cheap as possible.

They are about as simple as you'll get with a rebuild. The instructions with the kits are clear and easy to understand. Just have a clean work area to lay things out in and clean rags. Unless your shafts are worn, a rebuild will be MUCH cheaper than buying a rebuilt carb.

sounds like a good subject for a basic tech post.

Aww come on ****o... that's one of the eisyest carbs to rebuild.. simpler than trying to spell E-Z -er.. Sparky:D

  6. It's not as much the rebuilding I have a problem with as it is getting it all dialed in after. I can never seem to get them adjusted so they work correctly.

As stated this is one of the simpler carbs to rebuild. a kit will have instructions for each of the applications for that particular carb. I'd strongly suggest you get a gallon of Dupont Gun and Equipment cleaner before you start. Dis***emble the carb and put it in the cleaner at least overnight so all of the deposits will disolve. then give it a through blasting with an air hose. If deposits are still present then give it another 24 hrs in the cleaner. Pick the appropiate set of instructions and follow them completely (pay close attention to the float height and drop specs). Also try to clean out all of the small bleed holes in the cluster and the throttle body with a tag wire just to make certain they are clear. Followed by another rinse in the carb cleaner.

If you follow the directions you'll have a sweet running carb that will give you good throttle response and as good mileage as that engine is capable of delivering.

The Rochester 2g carbs are real easy to rebuild. The rebuild kit can be bought at any good parts store for about 8-10 bucks. Like Frank said...clean and soak it real good in carb cleaner and get the float level right and you're home free.

Turn the air and fuel screws in all the way and then back them both out about a turn and a half. That shold get you in the ballpark for adustment to start with.

Once you get the motor running you can fine tune it from there.
Don't let Mike touch nothing!!!!;) :D

Also I must add that it is much easier to make your old carb work right than it is to get an over the counter reman to work. Those things tend to be junk throwed together with whatever parts they can make fit, often missing parts.
I'm not sure about the type of dip mentioned but I can't stand the smell of carb dip. It takes days to get the smell out of your skin. Personally I use Berryman's B-12 spray. I use the red plastic straw and shoot it through all the p***ages, then blow down with air. On real greasy carbs I use parts solvent and a brush to clean the outside first. I have probably rebuilt at least 100 carbs using the stuff and don't recall any unsuccessful rebuilds. I have had a couple with the dip. On was on a 2GC. Soaking it must have opened up a crack or something but I lost vauum signal to the power valve somehow.

Keep in mind there are 2 rochester carbs...one has a approx 3 1/8 inch diameter measured where the choke plate is and the other is smaller about 2 1/2 inchs....as stated by others follow the directions and clean it very well....I just did 3 of these for my car and I made a mistake with 2 of them...I put the wrong gaskets in them and the carbs would not squirt gas..quick fix I removed and put the other proper gaskets in....so when taking it apart carefully remove and keep the old gaskets for a reference...in the rebuild kits many have other gaskets ect. to fit other year carbs....there are steel balls also in side the carb so don't turn it upside down without watching to see where the ball came from...the kit has 2 different sizes in it...as stated befor follow the directions...Miller
