so what can this guy do to get in to Torque Fest?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by coolstuff, Apr 4, 2010.

  1. I was thinking the same thing about those front wheels. Chrome reverses, yes sir. I'd leave the rest of the car absolutely alone. Hot rods need to be a little on the nasty lookin' side.

What's wrong with the idea of one show inside and another out in the parking lot? Promote the show that way. Drivers and show cars.

Just because he doesn't get inside the fence doesn't make you a bad guy, or mean that he has a bad car. It just means it isn't a match. Period. That's all. It's just a car show, for cryin' out loud.

I wish that here on the East Coast we saw more cars like the '55 above. It's rare anymore on a regular basis. This guy's got nothing in the world to apologize for. If I drove to the grocery store and saw somebody turn onto the street in that thing and burn a little rubber, I'd hoot and holler. God bless him is what I say, show or no show.

And I hope it has a loud set of pipes to boot....

If I was running a car show there would be two rules.

    1. I would set a year cut off and since the HAMB is my website of choice it would be 64 and older with continuances of cars/trucks that are the same body style as the 64 meaning a 65 Falcon and a 65 Chevy truck would both be welcome.

    2. no trailer queens. You drive it to the show it gets in.

beyond that I would let pretty much anything in...stock, rat, etc.

  4. No its not, no 55 came from the factory with stance like that. You are getting hung up on your own rules.

John it is YOUR show and they are YOUR rules. The worst thing you can do is not stick to them. Ask your guys to follow them to the letter and nobody will be upset. It is when there are variances and allowances that folks get upset.

You will never please everybody and you must not allow yourself to get caught up in the emotions. You are doing the correct thing be assigning the duty of enforcing your rules to others. Now it is up to you to step back and let them do their jobs.

Not stock ride height wise...but one thing I'd ask of him was a front wheel change. Those wheels are not in your criteria. Other than that, he's in.
Reason on those whells is you'd have guys with crager sst's and then welds etc bitchin cause they can't be in due to wheels but this guy is...rules are rules.

Just drive the dang thing there!I`ve got a 5 hour drive(300 miles) to get there and I`m from Iowa. Mines got wide white walls with 57 Caddy hubcaps and is pinstriped. But its a 69. So I`m in the other parking lot, BIG deal. Half the fun is getting there. Are you gonna suggest I alter my title to get in. Not! Just drive it and have fun. Allthough, maybe next year.

Build whatever the hell you want. That hasn't changed. But don't bring it here unless it fits, and don't try and take it to shows that it doesn't fit. Easy enough. If you don't like it start your own forum and show.

    ya'll are too funny -
the deal is - I am trying to make everyone happy - bobwop is right - I cant do that.........
it is just part of my personality I guess

Try to smooth things over so that everyone feels like they are getting to participate - no one feeling left out ya know?

Bottom line - the enforcement criteria will be on the inspectors - when people come to me to complain - I will simply have to tell them that the inspectors are out there doing the best job they can and that we are ALL trying our best.

Steves32 - yeah - he has to change the front wheels to get in the show ( i had already emailed him that initially before I posted on here.....he wanted to know anything else that would need to be done) - again there is VIP parking right up front for those that dont quite make the cut - this parking is guarded and will be a show in itself from the amount of people that I know that are coming up..........
many many street rodders and restored to perfection classics - and that is cool - they just dont get in.

Again - I have had 5-15 emails a DAY asking if their rides are getting in.

I have been able to tell almost all these people with authority yes or no.
I simply wanted to run a couple of these by ya'll in hope you could tell me something constructive about their rides........

and Chubbie.........seems like you are attacking me personally - weird

as I have stated from the beginning of this show - it is all about fun

I want people to have a good time.
Anyone with the negative energy / bad vibes / negative attitude
    please stay home
We all wanna have a great day and avoid as much drama as possible - so if you are itching for a fight - dont come to Torque Fest

here is my car - it will be at the show

    Ok, coolstuff
you may be right, it may have seemed a little personal. I'm very SORRY But we do have a history
back when you hyjacked every tread that had "Iowa" in it to promote your show. ok.. THATS WEIRD someone asked you not do that......you went personal
Till another HAMB bone made his view on your hyjacking very clear.

I AM SORRY FOR TAKEING A CHEAP SHOT AT YOU. I AM USUALLY ABOVE THAT KIND OF THING

  19. Heres my take for whats it worth. This is the first year for the show right, so why not cut some guys a break on whats considered super cool, just say no to the over the top rat rods. After all we are in iowa, a lot of us are young and dont have a lot of money to put into our cars, and Im sure the customs in the indoor section not to mention some of the rides that the bigger clubs are bringing will inspire us all to step and make our shit even cooler. Besides, this show will not move forward with out a lot of people, cars and bikes through the gates. I commend John for all his hard work and am looking forward to helping anyway I can. My junk isnt really custom, just shaved hood and tailgate, lowered, wheels etc. I guess I dont expect cars like mine to be turned away.

And most important, read about what this show is going to benefit, then tell me we should turn most rides away. Trash me if you like, just my 2 cents.

The rules are there to create a vintage environment for the SPECTATOR. The 55 doesn't look the vintage with 1980 camaro turbine wheels. I think it is VERY improtant to protect the integrity of the show for the spectator. That's what makes it a desireable show to attend. I can go to any racetrack on any Sunday if I want to see some 80's crap.

That 55 is cool. Looks like the kind of car that uses the money where it matters, underneath.

obviously the '55 has created a split in the community - it is stuff like this that will undoubtedly cause some drama the day of the show..........
but it is kinda like the baseball hall of fame

if you have to make a case on why the person in question should be in......
then they probably should not be in

same goes for the hot rods and customs at the show.........if the owner has to justify why he/she should be able to get in - then perhaps they should not worry about it and just come out and have FUN

countrysedanman - thanks for the input - I also appreciate you referring to the expense trust to which all the car entry fees/tshirt sales/spectator fees are going to
    www.helpinghannahsheart.org
yes - if we wanted to raise as much money as we possibly can - we would just let everyone in - but we are trying to do something special here and hopefully everyone here can contribute to the overall good of the show. As I have said before - there are MANY people in Iowa that have wanted to get something like this going - but have never been able to really give it that huge push it needs................that is where the Los Punk Rods, and the Cheaters and even help from the Chrome Czars have helped.

chubbie - yeah - I have a way of hijacking everyones thread - no worries baby - I am into peace and love - yet I am not a hippy - weird huh?

I dont THINK I am as bad as Breeder and Cliffy..........not yet anyway - oh and just so ya'll know - Rust Revival is coming up in May in Wayland MO - and Symco is coming up in Aug
    THERE
now Cliffy and Breeder dont have to Hijack THIS thread!!!!
    ha

and lets not forget about the Hunnert Heads Up and the Jalopy Showdown as well!
    oh
    and Beatersville

    man

    May is gonna be busy!

and the first weekend in June is the Blacktop Barons show right?
    and then Scrap Drive?

    wow

    non stop baby

see Chubbie - I just hijacked my OWN thread!!!!

back when all the HOT ROD shows were pre 49 nobody cared about cars that didn't qualify to attend. owners parked outside or stayed home.

    things were much simpler then

  24. Well John, your right about not making everybody happy, but I also think you are right in trying to make as many people happy as possible. Im sure noone expects the first year to go perfect anyway. I guess when the volunteers show up everyone will have to meet up and go over the requirements one last time to be clear. I think the VIP section is a great idea. My dad wants to bring his 64 Fairlane sports coupe, buts its more of a muscle car style than traditional, and knowing he can park where it wont get trashed makes him happy. Hell, he might even volunteer, and learn what types of cars make the cut.

  25. Good luck in your venture. Sounds like your going to have your hands full trying to get people in the gate without the car nazis crusifying them. It sounds like a super show idea. Maybe you could parade them in with your 35 Coupe.

the first year I drove my '54 to a show in Ill, I almost didnt get in, I know my car sucks but thats why I emailed pics before to make sure I could enter, and I was told I could. Once I got in I realized that if I would have stopped at Walmart and bought flat black and red paint I would have been in for sure. There were plenty STOCK cars that were just flat black with red wheels, at least mine was lowered.....?

1... easiest way to get into the VIP section is... i take bribes . money, flathead parts, your wife or girlfriend ... or your wife's girlfriend :) etc etc etc
2...don't ask what cool is... if you dont know , you never will
3...there's gonna be a lot of cool cars that dont fit the mold of john's show. we arent turning them away ,they can still get in ...just park them next to john's 35
    4... did i mention i take bribes...
5... chubbie = brutal towards john
6... please remember the show is for charity so if you wanna be an ass donate first ...

  30. I don't know, and this is my opinon so if you don't care to read it stop now, but an easy way to define what is allowed is to actually give an example (photos) of what type Hot Rod and what type of Custom is allowed. Then reject anything that is remotely close to stock instead of encouraging someone to alter the appearance of their car for one show. These folks need to understand that if they don't have something that applies to the rules, they need not fret. That is where I think the problem lies. The second parking lot which kinda just sounds like a daycare for people who wanted the cars there and "couldn't" be near the "action". The existence of such a place ultimately cheapens the fact these folks have a nice car, just not right for the show. It would be nice to just set up a "gate" and just charge seperately as per car applies. There is no real need to have what looks on paper to be two different shows at he same bat place, same bat time.

Secondly, or thirdly, decide the level of "finish" and "progress" the auto need to be in to participate. This definition is subjective and varies from person to person so YOU need to establish if flaked panels/cut coils/whitewalls make a custom. On paper it looks like no, but there are some folks that can really work magic with a given combo.

Problem is if you follow any of this, the show either becomes complacent or turns into some quality stuff. I've seen both and would hate to throw a show because I know some folks last 5 or so years before it really catches. It looks like you have some great things going on though and I'd love to attend sometime, whether it be spectator or participant.

The one thing to remember is to have a good foundation and it looks like it's about there.

    My two pennies,
    B.M.
