I actually did this to a '40 coupe too. But I was in college at the time, so it wasn't "highschool" appropriate.

39 Hudson taillights would be perfect, similiar to the Stude but just way cooler cause they are Hudson. And don't get the Hudson 112 get the Country Club models.

Sort of off topic, but I hope you'll forgive my little diversion Kirk!. It seems that this would be the crowd with the answer. I read some time ago that Gene Winfield was a source for repro '41 Stude lights. Does anyone know if this is true? Is there another source. I love the shape of them and the fact that Rikster's photos in this thread depict several '40 rears beautified by them speaks volumes. If something is available can anyone speak to their quality?

Forget the Gene Winfield route. Go to Alchemy's web site for 40 Studebaker tail lights. They're the only way to go -- unless you can find some mint originals.

THe 39 and 40 taillights are the classiest ever made in my opinion, leave well enough alone.

If you check out some of the early 50's 40's, One easy modification they would do to the tail lights is cut the center bar out of the stock lights.
The maroon flamed 40 coupe feature in an early rod & custom had this done to it.
