I have a 1946 chevy business (2 p***enger) coupe with the fixed rear windows. These install and are sealed very much like the rear windshield. I am wondering what would be involved in converting to the sliding quarter windows used in the 5 p***enger coupes. Has anyone ever done this? Also, does anyone have pics of how these are constructed, and how they work? I have never seen a 5 p***enger coupe, the two I have owned have both been business coupes. I have looked at the Fisher body manual, but it doesn't really show much. Thanks in advance, ****gy
I'm thinking you would need to take all the parts from a car that came with the sliding windows to do it right.
That is what I am planning to do if it isn't too involved (talking to someone who is parting one out now). I am hoping someone has done it before, and can tell me what I have to change/get. Like I said, I don't even know exactly what the windows do in the sliding window cars. Do they go down into the body, or is it more similar to a pop-out window? I know that some of the non-coupe cars had full, roll down windows, so the distinction of a 'sliding' window by the factory must mean that they work differently. -****gy
My 48 Fleetmaster coupe (NOT Fleetline Aerosedan/fastback) has sliding rear windows. They literally just slide forward/backward a couple of inches. That's it. I think the business coupes and regular coupes are probably the same body, so transferring all the window parts from one to the other should be pretty easy. The holes may even be already drilled or marked. Just ask your part supplier to take pics before he dis***embles it
Hellfish, Thanks for the reply! Does your car have a window crank to move the window, or is it just a lever on the window that you grab? I have seen a pic of the inside of what I believe was an Aerosedan, and it had a sliding window that had a handle directly on the window. -****gy
My 41 coupe has a small chrome handle on the inside of the window. And it does just slide a couple inches. Probably one of the big things in converting would be the channel that the window sits in. It is like a drain pan with a hose that drains just in front of rear wheel. Wouldn't think it would be too hard to fabricate if you couldn't get these out of the parts car. I will try to post a pic tonight of what one of mine looks like. One of my little handles on the window broke so I am looking for a replacement.
I cut up a 47 Fleetline 4 door that had the sliding rear side windows. Broadens your search for parts!
my 46 stylemaster has fixed windows, 47 fleetmaster has the moving ones. IIRC, the handle is a small lever on the inside of the garnish molding and you just slide the window back (although it doesnt slide too far).
