i just bought a pair of firestone 1000/15 cheater slicks for my model a pick up.is there a specific way to mounting them on a 15x10 rim? some say so.not just any tire shop would do it.i bought them from coker
Should not be any problem at all...nothing special. Why won't a tire shop do it? Doesn't even matter if they go tubeless or tube type. Not sure why some think it would be special.
they said had to be done a certain way.a tire is a tire to me.just wondering if anyone else has stumbled on this problem as well
No different than any other tire. If you are mounting them on a set of reversed rims such as Cragar SS reversed, mount them from the back side of the rim or you will break the center.
Sounds to me like the tire shop didnt want to do them. I've mounted quite a few and have never had any problems. Gettin to balloon out on a 10 might be tough though. If they are reversed rims they do have to be mounted from the backside
yes they are reversed rims (smothies from rally america series 12)so they do have to be mounted backwards?good tips guys appreciate it thanks.
A 10" wide tire on a 10" wide wheel is not much of a stretch unless the tire is really short(no sidewall) in diameter compared to rim diameter. On reve****d wheels you just mount the tire from the backside of the rim. You have to mount it onto the narrowest lip/seat of the rim, otherwise you will not be able to stretch the tire over the bead if it is was down below the wide lip/seat of the rim. Do you have a "mom and pop" style tire store in your area? I would go there first...a lot of the "chain" type stores do not have people working there with enough knowledge on how to do anything other than modern ****. At least that is how it is around here. If for some reason you are looking to take a vacation...or just a really long road trip for the hellofit, you are more than welcome to bring them over to my place and I'll mount and balance them for ya for free!!!
CAUTION...HANDLE WITH CARE!!! Lippy, that does work, but needs much more info!!! I told a guy to use starting fluid/ether to seat the beads on some 40" mud tires years ago...well, you should have heard the phone call I got from him!!!! Long story short, when I got to his place the rim was inside the tire!!! Both beads had blown out over the rim!!!! I never laughed soo hard at a guy who was soo pissed!!!! So, to all that read Lippy's advice...CAUTION...HANDLE WITH CARE. A LITTLE SPRAY GOES A LONG WAY!!! Been there, blown that up.
No special mounting neaded, any decent tire shop should be able to mount them for ya and a 8-10 is recommended for the 1000's. I have the 820 on an 8" rim and mounted a set of the 1000's on a 10" rim for a friend, they should be on a 10", they are to wide for an 8" rim in my opinion, both are done tubeless also. I mounted all of mine and beaded them in my garage. I know the "old school" method is to use ether but I would stear clear of that. If the beads are pulled in to far you can wrap a wratchet strap around the center of the tires tread and start clamping it to push the sidewall out or they use tanks with a 2" or bigger valves on them that will blast a m***ive amount of air in real quick seating the beads. You can also cut some boards about 10" long and put them around the inside of the bead and spread the tire by letting them set that way for a day or so. I've also used smaller, skinny inner tubes to seal the bead. Put the tube on the back side of the rim (where the long taper is) between the rim and the sidewall of the tire and inflate it a little, when you start putting air in the tire it with start to push the side wall out. It pushes the tube right off as the tire beads to the rim. Good luck My 820's on an 8" rim (both rims are 8's) . . . that's funny, in an unrelated story I laughed like that at a friend back in the early 80's when "Bug Zappers" came out. I convinced him it would only tingle if he touched it, it blew off half of his finger nail, woops.
LOL, I'm sorry, sometimes I forget how old I am. Just a little shot will do it. Then stand back. I need to quit giving advice. Since we don't have book matches anymore, use a propane torch, but remember...hit and run. LOL. Lippy, and remember fumes spread.
Mount them yourself and just have the tire shop use an air blaster if you cant seat the bead. Also, I have found that letting the tire bask in the sun for an hour helps to pop them out to the bead.
Nothing to be sorry for Lippy...your advice does work...just needed a little disclaimer added!!! It's all in good fun man.
