Thanks, came across that chart before. At first, I thought I was mistaken with the last digit being a "9". but I don't think there is any mistaking it.....

You may want to check into 525 engines for that casting number. Outward appearance is like a 500, BUT it is a totally different animal. This is a guess on the #. I went through this not to long ago. Sold one as a 500 and turned out to be a 525 after the guy torn it down. had to refund his money. Since then I s****ped the block, so I can't go out and look at it.

Could you give some more info on this? I was not aware that Cadillac made a 525. I can not find anything on the net about it. Thanks.

The Antique Automobile Club of America has a Cad/Lasalle forum-you could check there: http://forums.aaca.org/f151/.

There used to be a group called the American Automobile Casting Numbers Club, but their website has been suspended since January and i don't know how to contact them. Have you tried actually talking to an old Cadillac dealer partsman?

The best way to identify it is to remove the pan and check the casting number on the crank. I too have never heard of a 525 cadillac. I have always heard however that the 500 was the largest cubes ever made for gm. I have seen your other posts on roaddevils. It is a cadillac engine, but that number 9 at the end screws with things quite a bit. Check the crank casting number. If you don't want to do that, measure the stroke but putting it on tdc, remove the number 1 plug, put a tig wire or a coat hanger in the hole. Then mark the coat hanger or tig wire at that point. Next rotate the ***embly and mark the wire again. Then measure the distance between them. If it's 4.06", its a 472 or lower, if it's 4.3", then it's a 500. Happy hunting.

Mystery solved. Had a caddy expert look at a bunch of the pictures and he stated that it is a '68/'69 Caddy 472 with 1970's heads. Says it was common for the last casting number an "8" to look like a "9" due to air bubbles that got trapped there.

  11. I think the "525" that is being referred to is the "425"...

I have read that the '68-early '69 blocks had inferior lower end oiling, compared to the castings ending in "5220"

    Just food for thought...
