Aerosol Chrome Paint - Are Any Worth The Time?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by supercharged, Apr 8, 2010.

  1. Has anyone out there used Spaz Stix chrome aersol for interior trim?

    I found this article: http://www.automotivehelper.com/topic638256.htm
Which has a test of Spaz Stix, Alclad II and Alsa Killer Chrome and the much cheaper Spaz Stix and Alclad came out the winners!

I am looking for a cheap way to spray-chrome interior dash trim, without the high cost of replating and the horrible results of most chrome spray paints.

If this comparison test is correct, I am glad I didn't spend the $120+ for the Killer Chrome Kit!

What do my fellow penny pinchers out there recommend?

not worth the time. Haven't seen one that looks even close

  4. I have been exploring this as well for my new rails front axle and radius rods.
I bought a can of Duplicolour Chrome. I srayed 2 coats and it looked good , gave it another and it was even better. As good as real chrome? no but it looked like well poished aluminum. I tried cear coat from same manufacurer over it but lost the look immediately. I think four coats properly sprayed and cured will do what i want .
Not real chrome but a far cry from the l;d alumnum paint. If you would like i take some picks of my test piece and post it.

  5. That would be great...as an engineer the more data the better!;)

  6. Shit, can o chrome? Why not? try it on something first, if u dont like it dont waste ur time. Theres a company out there now that u can spray on chrome with a spraygun. but the machine was I think $7000. But it looks like real chrome. Google chrome paint and sema. see for yourself!

  7. I am not sure what the offense is.

On a show rod or a full restoration, sure spray chrome is crazy.

But for a budget rod or a daily driver, if it does the job - why not?

Its not like its not reversible!

I agree 100%. Sometimes there's a lack of understanding when it comes to budgets of those w/o show cars. Even locally, I get sh*t for running a $30 points distributor instead of HEI, for using my stock 1950 leaf springs, and for not completely rebuilding my 283. I just don't get the snobbery. Do I plan on upgrading things as I go along? Hellz yes. As long as what you're doing is *mechanically* sound, why should they care? All it does is alienate people into factions :p

  9. I bought some spray chrome at a hobby shop a few yrs ago that work pretty good. It was to be sprayed over gloss black. I used it for the chrome trim around the dash cluster on a 70 Chevelle and it looked surpisingly good

It looks okay if you realise going into it that it won't look like chrome. Almost looks like old school nickle plating or like another said polished aluminium. If you are expectng it to look like chrome your wasting time and money.

Sometimes you can come up with an interesting yet cool look by experimenting. What you just said about the old school nickel plating or polished aluminum....got me to thinking about Bass's coupe that he just posted updated pics of. He lives in TX so he can keep the steel bare and not worry about the rust carrying it off in a fortnight the way it can here in Jersey. I love that look, but you would have to accomplish it through paint if you're living up here....who knows if you could duplicate it by using that chrome paint, though.

  12. I've found that the Rustoleum 'Chrome' paint does a decent job of duplicating a cad-plated finish for fasteners under the hood. Looks a bit phony in direct sunlight, but for small parts under the hood it's not too bad.

Why not have your interior parts vacuum metalized?

no. when you spray it , it runs like water and leaves little streaks and so on. I dont know any other way of making stuff shiney unless you have it done professionally, but please dont waste your time with spray on chrome.

Ha when I read this I thought to myself "sounds like Jersey" then I looked at your avatar and realized it was.

As for the spray chrome I may run my bumpers like this since the only other option is to leave them unfinished. I see someone else just started a similar thread looking for pictures.

    no.

    ;>) I hear ya!
Here is my test piece two coats. For the look I want I am fine with this. It looks better than normal paint and very close to polished aluminum. For front axle, spindles and radius rods I am happy with the idea. For the new Green chorme they wanted $275 for just the axle alone and the look is not different enough or better enough for me to warrant the expense. This is a race car. i want it to look nice but it does not have to be show chrome.
The test piece is sitting on the exact stuff that will be painted eventually. The lower tubing is as produced. The upper which is from the same length of tubing is my test piece and has just two quick coats of Duplicolour spray chrome.

Paint is, fake wanna be chrome is not...

  20. I'd give it a shot on interior dash plastic like on Falcons and such. Sure it was just paint from the factory .
    Bumpers or exterior parts, No.

  21. wanabes??????
    Ouch!!!!!!
    Chrome?
"If it wont go Chrome it" was what i was taught. So for me tis paint.

  22. ive seen alcad used on model cars it looks really good but its obviously not chrome

  23. And that is what I am looking for...making worn chrome on old dash trim, that is impossible to find, look a little better.

Later if I decide to fully restore then I can sent it out to be vacuum chromed!;)

  24. I'd be willing to try it on some dash plastics, bezels inside the car, etc. On the outside of the car, I'd guarantee it wouldnt look right...but on some small things? It looks like the one method that is sprayed over black worked pretty well on the plastic.
