Bought a '40 Ford sedan a few months ago and have to cobble up a mechanical E-brake setup. Unfortunately, I've had no luck identifying what kind of rear end it has. The seller (not the builder) thought it was a Ford ??? I've checked a bunch of axle-related websites...but nothing sure. Attached are a few pics. Some clues....the driver's side axle has left-hand threads (Mopar? Ford truck?); 11" brake drums; 10 bolt carrier with H31 embossed; no rear access cover; no identifying marks on the axle tubes I could see. Appreciate any help, Thanks
Looks like the rear in my 56 Pontiac too.....pull an axle and count the splines....10 is 55 and older.
Olds/Pont definately 5 on 5"bc H31 should identify casting date could be July 3 61 but left hand theads throw me off could be July 3 51 in which case it will have 10 teeth axle spline. A 61 rear has 31 spline. If leaf spring peches are original its early not 61. Hope this helps. Pat
I suspect a 57-58 Pontiac/Olds housing that may have been upgraded with a 31 spline carrier. I believe 60 olds axles were 31 spline and fit in the earlier narrow 57-58 Pontiac housings. If so it uses 1 e brake cable that goes to each drum than pulled at a spreader from another front cable. http://pontiacsafari.com/MPC/Pages/page_0298.jpg

The wheels have a 5” bolt pattern. Found a reference document on alt.hotrod that had 5" stud patterns for Buicks '35-87, Pontiacs '40-86, Olds '40-87, Chrysler/Imp '67-71, Mercs 55-60, Fords mid-70s among others, The LH threads on the driver's side have me stumped although I remember them on some Mopars.[/FONT]
The lug bolts could have been someone's change when they swapped rear ends. Back when, a lot of guys thought that you had to have left hand threads on the left side of the car to keep them from coming loose. I don't remember if my dad's 57 Olds had left or right hand threads on the drivers side so that is no help.
It is Olds/Pont you will have to pull an axle to find exact year, many parts are interchangeable whithin certain parameters. I had lh threads on my 57 pont/olds
that looks like the rearend under my PU that no one can identify. Mine has 5x5.5 pattern, . I saw a rearend yesterday at the swap with the same look (its was a 58 or 59Chysler out of a 300 with a 5x5 pattern
I would guess it's the same rear end as the one in my 51 olds super88. Left hand thread 5x5 and the axle ends look the same. Here are some pics. hope this helps. It looks like the lower srping perches are the original. That is if the one in my car is original and I think it is.
49-56 Pontiac/Olds rearends are more or less the same thing. On the Chryslers, so far as I know only Imperial had a 5x5" pattern, the others were 5x4.5", and none of them (unless Dodge trucks used it) had the 5x5.5" - that's primarily a Ford pattern.
Appreciate the help. The pics are dead-on......now to pull together the parts and fab the thing. Thanks all.
