This is my first cl***ic. I am registering it in ny. I have a 55 1st series chevy truck. Picking up a 1955 NY plate tomorrow. What is the process to register the vehicle and use the plate? I have seen on here and locally people using older plates. Thank you.

If the truck is already registered with the "vintage 55 plate" you could get it transferred. The first step in the process is you must have and insurance card from a cl***ic car insurance carrier that is embossed with Historic or historical. The plate combination numbers & letter must not now be in use. You will be required to make a picture or color copy of both plates front & rear. (Sorry 1947 was the only year for one plate in NY) I would take them individually and then together (find a color copier it makes life easier). The plates have to be in good legible condition a 1955 plate goes with a 55 vehicles etc. The following is the link for DMV vintage plate program. I have vintage plates on 2 of my 3 vehicles. The thrid one has the DMV issued Historical plate. I would also tell you to deal with the Albany office (call them if you have questions) it makes life easiers since the local DMVs are usually clueless. You pay each year to register the vehicle and its your plate. Good luck.

Thank you guys very much for the education. One last question. How many miles a year are you permitted to drive with a "historical" plate? This isnt to and from the show thing is it?
