Canadian Online Speedshop

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mitchell de Moor, Apr 11, 2010.

  1. Hello, I often order things from Jegs or Summit but when they get into Canada I get killed from customs. Not the customs you guys think of the gay Canada customs. I was wondering if there is a place to order stuff from online in Canada? Thanks!

Nothing like Jegs or Summit that I have found. Not sure if you are close to the boarder in SK, but if you are get things shipped to a US box and bring them across yourself. WAY less $$$ than having UPS broker it for you. Even if you are a few hrs away you could make a run every 6 weeks or so...

  4. Thanks will do!

  5. Thanks I actually know a bunch of guys who do that. Then they take eveything out of the packages and when they go across the border they just say they are spare parts for if they break down so they don't have to pay duty.

Dont get caught doing that or it will be your last trip across the border its called smugiling and if the border guard wants to he can screw up your life. I know one of the guys from Ottawa did this and now can only cross with what he has store proof of purchase and takes hours to come back into Canada. No one will travel with him to any U.S. event.

  7. I stay away from couriers like UPS, PURALATOR, etc. The brokerage fees rip you off for nothing. I use USPS mail only. Sometimes there is duty to pay, sometimes not. Limited size and weight thou

x2....I've found that small ticket items (i.e. under $100) almost never get charged by Customs. Between $100-$200, there is a 50/50 chance and bigger ticket items will surely attract attention....
Great time to buy stuff though with the currency at par....

Don't know what sort of parts you're after, there's always http://www.horton.on.ca/
Paul Barber's a class act, just like Paul Horton who started the biz over 30 years ago.

  11. Wow, I had no idea thanks. I suppose I wont be trying that shit.

  12. Thanks, brokerage fees killed me. I ordered a torque wrench from Jegs for $19.99 and though I would be getting a good deal turned out I paid about 80 something dollars for it by the time it came over.

  13. I second Old Car Center out of Langley BC . Another one is Zeebs out of Calgary, ask for Zane.

    Parts are shipped from BC
No customs fees but a warehouse packaging fee
I'm sure its built into the price somewhere

There is no duty on Auto parts anymore. Not for several years. Only sales tax to pay at the border. We dont use UPS anymore because they charge a brockerage fee of $53 on stuff they know there is no duty for. We ship everything USPS (regular mail) No brokerage and more often than not nothng else either. Summit has been most cooperative with us. Used to be a Canadian High Perfomance Distrubtors in BC . I bought a lot from them but they seem to have disappeared. We would buy local but we get shafted big time. No one seems to be happy unless they are doubling the price. It should cost no more to buy here than if I buy from Summit and have it mailed. Otherwise only two things are possible , They arent buying from wholesale to sell to me or Summit is selling for less than wholesale. (not likely. ) Someday after I am gone to that big drag strip in the sky some Canadian with a few bucks will decide to run a decent auto parts business making a reasonable profit but being fair. He will make a bundle. Simplest solution would be a Summit or Jegs Canadian warehouse. I do joint projects with a local shop and he treats me real good. (Doesnt always have access to everything though.) As good as i can bring it in for, for sure.
I remember years ago i worked as a contractor for Hasting Ring Company demonstrating KAL Automotive Equipment. My direct supervisor was telling me one day that the Canadian division was losing so many sales to US mail oerders to Canada that they were going to have to slowly bring their prices in line with the US ones. "Why not do it tomorrrow?" i asked. "Oh we wouldnt want to do that!" he said. At the time I had just bought a set of rings (their brand moly rings) from the old Columbus Auto parts mail order for $39 US funds. I had checked my cost here (I buy trade price) and was quoted $139 something here for the EXACT SAME ringset. I know there was some exchange and some shipping but not $100 worth.
tis an old problem. Wish it would change soon . In the meantime I buy a lot and have it mailed.

  21. You obviously don't know how this works. Summit buys everything in Bulk. Meaning they pay less, because they buy more. There is no way a small local business can compete, they don't buy on the same scale.

  22. I was in business for many years . I understand but there is NO EXCUSE whatsoever for a difference of $100 on a set of piston rings for instance
Or a set of L2355F pistons which is something i used a lot of in my business. Summit or even my pal s price under $400 Canadian. Local wholesaler want $175.00 EACH!
unacceptable. All wholesalers buy from a WD who buys in bulk. Even here in Canada.
I will pay more than the US price , no problem I understand there must be a difference but not double or better. Canadian Hi PerF in Bc provided excellant service and price for many years. I think he must have retired or passed away. His prices were fair and his service excellant. I probably used him for over 10 years I think. If he can so can others. When i see friends buying Edelbrock carbs for $700 and $800 I know something is wrong wrong wrong.

  23. you're right double is excessive. I wasn't trying to question that. Just that you should be able to get a part locally for the same price as at summit....

  24. Ok I dont expect it at the same price. I just dont like getting robbed.

..here's a thought....if the Canadian dollar is at par after being at about 90-93 cents for years, that should reduce Canadian costs for speed equipment from the US (through rod shops etc) which, in a perfect world, should be passed on to consumers....I doubt we'll see it.....

  26. Hortons rocks!!! It rocked when Paul Horton owned it and ran it out of Breslau, Ontario, and it rocks now that Paul Barber runs it out of Milton, Ontario. I've been dealing with them for years. Honest, dependable, and they don't gouge pricewise. If you are a Canadian buying direct from USA and have a problem with the product, well, good luck buddy. If you buy through Hortons they will make it right, no problems.---Brian

A lot of US companies only want to use courier UPS etc. They must come and pick up the orders where they must have to go to the post office to deliver.

Paul Horton is still in business. He & his son DW now run Welder Series - a company aimed at guys like most of us. he has kits to do a lot of things from engine mounts to mustang 2 based suspension. Laser cut parts you can assemble yourself. Do a search & you will find several threads where guys have used their products. Paul & DW are good people, they have helped me & my dad a bunch with advice & troubleshooting on our coupe. DW is on here as WelderSeries. He is an alliance vendor. http://www.welderseries.com/

Paul Barber (now running Horton street rods) is a good guy too. He has also been very helpful during our build.

Also, Dolmetsch there is still duty on car parts. it is only original antique parts and reproductions of original antique parts that are duty free. performance parts & any parts for a newer vehicle are still subject to duties & taxes when you come home. Any of the border guards & customs people I have dealt with have made that very clear.

And to the guys who suggested smuggling the stuff across or lying to the customs people - bad idea. a guy in my hometown tried that with a restored 37 plymouth coupe. told them he paid $4000 for it (he actually paid $12,000) and the border guard he got questioned it - pull over there sir. He was in a little room at the border for 10 hours, had the whole take your clothes off & turn around experience, and had the car, the truck & the trailer all impounded.

The border called the seller to verify the price and the seller told them the actual selling price. Guy at the border got charged with providing false documents (fake bill of sale), smuggling, and a couple of others I cannot remember that were basically because he pissed them off.

took 3 months & several thousand dollars in storage fee's & fines to get the truck, trailer & car back. plus they charged him what the original duty & taxes would have been if he had been honest in the first place. also he has however many thousand $$ in lawyer fee's ahead of him and all of the charges to deal with.

Oh, and he crosses the border several times a month on business & it is a 4 hour ordeal each way for him now. they tear his car apart each time he comes home now. it has gotten to the point that no one will ride with him across the border anymore.

IMO, lying to them is a bad idea with a capital bad.

Yup. Be honest at the border. MOST times they are more than fair.
