Today I was that old guy that says "Nothings for sale!"

Had a youg kid, still in H.S. ring the door bell and ask if he could go back and look at my old cars. He was looking to build a cheap one of those rods that we don't mention on here! He was driving around and looking, just like we all do. My wife said, you better hide them a little better.

What if he keeps coming back like we tell each other to do? Will you give the young man a chance to get his start?

  9. Im sure glad when i was in high school and saved 3 full paychecks to get my first car.. which was all of about 1200 bucks or a little more because i worked part time and went to school the guy i bought my first car off of wasnt like you.. At least if he was we didnt have the internet so he could come online and boast about running me off in an attempt to shatter my dream of having an old car instead of some import rice crap..He paved the way for who i am today.. im only 30 but all i know and want to work on every single day is old cars and that is all i do.. Maybe it just hit a sore spot with me because i used to volunteer my time once a week to the local car club that was a group of older guys driven to get the high school kids in to keep a passion alive.

  10. I perfer to see kids into classics instead of imports.Give a kid a chance.Everythings got a price.

Don't let 'em rot away. A kid building something, like it or not, is.... Ehhh, who am I kidding, you got your mind made up. Let them sit.

Thats what I was thinking, If it werent for cars and working with my hands in general I have no clue were I would be. To be honest it is the only thing I have going for me and the only thing I am truly pasonit about. If it werent for older guys giving me deals and helping me out I dont know were I would be now. If you think he is just going to build a rat rod and distroy a car, then offer to help him help.

Invite him back, take him under your wing and teach him to do it right. At the very least, he is off to a good start by looking for old iron rather than an old integra or golf.

to each his own...I dont think you have to sell anything that you dont. If the kid dont cut it for you, maybe someone else will...

  20. being a young guy (21) this has happened to me many times as well, I've been building classic cars, hot rods, kustoms since I was 16...unforentally most of the old guys houses I've stoped at havent offered any info or help or will sell any of their cars that are roting away in the backyard, but once in awhile I'll find someone who is willing to sell or atleast give me info and tell me stories for an hour or so....got to remember us young guys are the future of hot rodding, that kid could turn to mini trucks now like most of my friends have

Hell yea, I hoard all my parts and projects. And if I kick off in the night you can buy what my wife and daughter let go...if anything. Like I have said before, out of sight out of mind!

I say show him how to build a real car and not a honk o crap.

  23. i think you missed a great chance to influence a young guy into real hot rodding. if you see him again, tell him about the hamb and the evils of rr.
you still dont have to sell him anything, just educate him.
it might work and it might not.
you can lead a horse to water, but...................

  24. Well minitrucks are not so bad lol.. considering the guy who is driving one builds it himself.. i mean Think about how much fabrication and modifications go into a full blown mini.. Not to mention your a air ride distributor so im sure business is good from your friends haha.. I can appreciate the work and artistic spin they have into them.. Minitruckers are not the guys thinking their 4 banger in their import can outrun anything on 4 wheels and they are a car guy cause they ordered i plastic body kit and screwed it on..

Do you have a line on something he could buy either from a buddy or contact that would sell? Help the kid out and maybe he won't steal parts from you in the middle of the night :) I agree with the other guys, you missed an opportunity.

  28. I've helped build a few mini trucks and I know they are a lot of work and take a lot of skill and I defiantly appreciate that aspect of it and some of them look pretty good but I'd much rather see someone bag a '53 Chevy than an S10 but in the end I guess you got to respect any type of build as were all trying to do the same thing..build a bitchen car, drive it and have fun

we've all been there! Hoping to find a car, maybe talk an owner into selling it? I agree, if he comes back it gives you an opportunity to stir him into the hobby....Give the kid a chance, you were a kid once!:D
