Flasher or turnsignal switch?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rob-redm, Apr 4, 2010.

  1. The turn signals on the 56 Chev were working great today till I got about half way home . They stopped all together, wondering should I start with a flasher first. I have a new switch I bought when I had that wiring problem( remember) But they were working just fine then stopped, Flashers are cheap so maybe a first place to start.

Check to make sure the flasher hasn't just wiggled loose and broken contact. Push it in and see if it works. If not, just replace the flasher and see what happens - cheap & easy to do.

May want to check for a burn out or loose bulb but I believe you would only see a problem on one side

check for a bad ground at the tail light

  6. When you pull the flasher check for 12 volts on one terminal with the key on. If the hazards have a separate flasher be sure of which one you are checking.Sometimes you could just swap flashers if one was weak.

  7. front park lights and rear tailights seem ok, Should be just a 2 prong flasher relay, don't think it's anything special should be able to get at the local NAPA or parts store. Thank you.

  8. Do the lights come on but not flash? With the key on there has to be 12 volts at one of the terminals at the flasher...if not check the fuse.

Yep, make sure that you first have power to the flasher when the key is on.

Check the fuse and check for power to the flasher than work up stream.

Usually when one side of a turn signal switch goes out the other side still works.

A standard two prong flasher should work but make sure that it is for single tail lights as the ones for multiple bulbs on the back will think that you have a bulb burned out.

  10. Front park lights and rear taillights come on at the first pull of the knob at the headlight switch. They were working just fine, I get no indicator light at the cluster for left or right at all. I was told that those aren't fused maybe I was given wrong information

  11. well did the flasher, no luck... so farther I go ! bought just regular two prong flasher at the parts store and I hope the parts guy didn't give me a wrong one. I told him what I had car wise, he didn't even look it up and just went and got it. I have some people telling me there is fuse and other say no. I have a wiring diagram doesn't look to be one. is the correct or wrong. It's a reprint so , I thought I would ask again.

If the flasher didn't help then it's no current flow at all, therefore an open either in "big red" or "big black". It all went out at once seemingly.

    Did you check the fuse?
assuming the answer to that question is yes, you can test the turn signal switch with a meter or a test light pretty easily.
Is it a switch that clamps onto the column or is it in the column?
Do you have a switch for hazards? If so, is it hooked up?

  14. See I have been told there is fuse and no fuse. Anyone know for sure, nothing looked blown in the fuse block but I should get my drop light and look closer. They worked just fine then just quit , when I was going to make a left turn. Next right turn nothing as well.
