it warms my heart to hear that there are still some young guys that have the gibblets to seek out old cars instead of late model junk .who cares what he builds ,rat or not at least theres a spark there, could lead to a career ! maybe it would keep him off dope and alcohol etc. it worked for me!

I suppose we all might be guilty of some preconceived notions. I pulled into a Donut shop last night and the parking lot was filled with rice rockets and twice as many people hanging around them. Kinda felt like I was walking into the wrong bar. They stepped out of the way to let me into the only nearby space to be found. Thought for sure I was going to hear a collection of underbreath remakes of disdain. But instead, I was hearing COOL CAR! and being asked details.

I do magic on the weekends and have had kids come up and ask me to do some black magic. Once I explained what they were asking, it was clear that they didn't know what it was. The same may be occuring when we hear "Rat Rod" from the younger crowd. We've seen some examples of what I would label a rat rod right here on the HAMB and they received compliments. So it's sometimes a matter of where the line is drawn and different opinions of what's what. The more questions and answers are exchanged, the more clear things become.

I was at a show last night when a young fellow came up and started asking questions about what and how I'd done things he was looking at. Turns out he was getting started on his first project. A rusty 57 Chevy 210 sedan. Wasn't sure what direction he wanted to go, but knew he wanted to get creative since it would require more than he was willing to do back to original. So of course he knows all about the HAMB now as a friend who was tagging along was taking down all the information to find this site and how to navigate it. His friend doesn't have a project yet, but just maybe the HAMB will have a positive influence on the both of them. No, I didn't have anything to sell, but I have the HAMB to share with the youth looking for direction......

It's usually older guys from out of state who tend to stop at "that old farm house" and inquire about my not for sale stuff. One did make an offer of far more cash for one of my rigs and ended up hauling it home and dumping way more cash in it than I could ever have.

You guys fly off the handle the minute that "young guy" is mentioned and no one even asked if anything may actually have been for sale. Most likely it won't be long before one of you will be in the same boat and "nothing will be for sale".

The way one presents himself may have a lot to do with whether he gets offered a deal on anything or even gets to look at them too.

Gee, I sure hope when I get old enough I can collect a bunch of neat old cars that i will probably be too old to work on and most definatley too old to finish them all so I can tease everyone around me while I let them rot. Especially young kids so they will never have the same thrill I've had building a 50 year old car with my bare hands. I can't wait till I'm that old.

I have yet to find something I wanted to keep.If someone shows a interest I have no problem sell parts.I trade off stuff and even give stuff away to the right people.Seems over the years I have found that most of my stuff is only good to the guy knocking on the door.If the price is right it gone. That way I can bring home more stuff!!besides I have way more stuff then I need and I like it when i see it going to a good home.

  10. I like your post and i hope some day the term "Rat Rod" is more defined than it is today.. Defined meaning i have no exact definition of it.. People call my 5 window a Rat rod and i am fine with that. I mean its not traditional however none of the cars i build are deemed "unsafe" considering i put full floors in 4 corner disc brakes speedway front ends and everything is gusseted to the gills i use brand new gear boxes so my steering is smooth.. My point is if i were the kid showing up at his door i would have said i was going to build a rat rod out of it myself. My definition though is different than his..I think its a loose term thrown around and automatically defaults back to the definition of that rod that has old juice brakes dry rotted tires and no transmission tunnel so you get to see the ground or worse the drive shaft while you drive her down the road.. that car needs a different definition i think

I have had younger friends of my son ask if I had anything for sale... I did sell one kid a 51 ford pickup but he never did anything with it... I have since told different kids that I can help them find something but I haven't sold anymore of my projects.... I do what I can to help encourage them because they are the FUTURE of hotrodding... If we don't encourage them who will....?

Hey! some of you guys were alittle ruff on me... I did talk to the kid, found out his name and were he was from. Just incase somthing comes up missing. Now don't get all bent out of shape over that! he he

I don't have a yard full of old iron. What he saw was a 29 tudor I had just purchased and a 33 plymouth sedan body.
I did give him a couple of leads on bodies, but he was looking for cheap. He told me something to put on a S10 frame. Now I don't have all day to educate him, I have three sons and one of the bodies he was interested in belongs to the one of them.

I maybe should have said everything is for sale...for the right price!

Should've told the kid they are spoken for and here is the price to "unspeak'em"...older guys got me into hot rodding 30 years ago....as for S-10 frames, alot guys here want to bash building that way...working on a 54 dodge with my Dad and he loves the "newer frame, power steering, disc brakes, dual master cylinder...all for about $150...so upgrading modern and keeping style is fine by me...oh ya, we are sticking 49 Plymouth fenders on as well...

RIGHT ON. I picked up my jalopy on my 30th birthday a year ago.....I knew I didn't have the experience to make it a show car, nor did I want it to be a show car, I wanted a daily driver. Thus, I thought the correct term for it (after reading the ever changing definitions) was a rat rod. I knew I wanted a car that was built mechanically sound, but on a budget. I reuse old bolts if they're still good, and I use rattle can paints....but all of my mechanical work is safe and secure. I upgrade when I have the funds...just as I'll strip and upgrade the paint and other "non essentials" as I get the duckets. As time has passed and the longer I've hung out on here, the more I learned there were others like me, and the term rat rod had *many* definitions. To me, it's half assed mechanical assembly that equals solutions that are potentially life threatening...or at least have a very limited shelf life.

I guess what I'm saying is that kid might have said "rat rod" but what he might have meant was "budget ride". You look in lots of mags that have things labeled as "rats" that would pass for traditional on here. If that kid is looking at those mags, then that's where he's likely getting the definition. I say go hunt his ass down, show up at his doorstep, and ask him....."so what *exactly* would you do with one of my cars *if* I were to sell it to you?" Right answer equals you have a new padowan...wrong answer means you turn around and go home.

I'm the other way around, I'd rather see kids practice on a ricer. Then, after they get some of the bullshit stupid ideas out of their heads, and develop some building skills, they might have what it take to show old iron the respect it deserves.

To the guy that saved up 3 paychecks to buy his car: Really?!?!? You had to wait 3 WHOLE WEEKS to buy your first car?!? talk about delayed gratification!!! Amazing!

Oldpaint had some cars in the backyard he's going to build and didn't sell them to some kid, and found the irony in that he was the guy saying NFS now. I thought it was kinda funny.

What's he sposed to do, give some random kid one of his cars for cheap so he can flip it? Teach this stranger's kid about cars at the cost of not spending time with his own kids?

Jeez you all are pretty free with someone else's property and time.
