Wow. May God heal your body and spirit Dave. I've driven that stretch a few times and am fortunate conditions were always reasonable.

    Stay safe out there.

Too bad. That always makes me show a little extra love to those closest. Hope everything turns out ok. Awesome no one died.

  3. Fuck the roadster. I hope Dave and his family are okay. I hope he recovers fine. Cars can always be rebuilt who cares it's just metal. I hope everyone is okay!

So sorry to hear about this accident. I wish him a speedy and complete recovery.

High winds can be a problem is rural parts of CA, especially in March and April. 93% of CA is rural mountainous or open desert or farm land (2/3 of the population lives on just 7% of the land near LA/SD/SF). The stretch of I-5 connecting north and south CA runs inland along rural hills on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley. In the Spring strong winds blow through narrow gaps in the hills and directly across the highway. Typically you are driving along shielded by a series of hills and feeling little or no wind at all for quite a distance, then all at once you cross a gap and get hit with a very powerful cross wind that can take you on a very wild ride.

In Portland a few days ago a guy died on I-5 in his beautiful orange 69 chevy C10. He lost control in the rain, hit a guard rail and was ejected, female passenger also ejected but lived, happened at about 3:00 AM.

A warning to anyone with wide tires on a light car in Portland: On I-5 and I-84 the trucks with tire chains have rutted out all lanes really bad, even light rain will leave 1" deep water in the ruts... The pic of the 69 chevy looked like it had 295mm wide tires all the way around.

What happened with Bob Cano? Anyone know?

I drove home yesterday (400+ miles to Utah) in a '32 roadster on bias plies. Man that wind sure pushed us around, even out of our lane a few times. It was pretty hairy a few times but no close calls fortunately.

First, prayers for all involved in the accidents. We've all had close calls at one time and another.

    OFF TOPIC:
Let's don't give the truckers an undeserved bad rap. Independent research indicates it is the civilian cars with studs which eat up the highways and cause those lane ruts in OR and WA.

I spent some years in the tire business. Studs are profitable for the tire dealers. However, modern snow tires actually perform better without studs in 99.99% of winter driving. Only on the rare conditions of glare ice are studs of any positive effect.

Bottom line - Any state which allows studded tires to rip millions of dollars in damage to their highways each winter obviously has a voting majority of wimps, weenies, wusses and dim-wits. And yes, I live in WA.

    thnx, jack vines

Louisiana has ruts in the road as well, no chains, just heavy trucks on poor quality roads.

I am not blaming trucks or truck drivers, fact is that better quality roads & better maintenance, (like in Texas) might have prevented the accident.

Of course, it was 3 am, and that could indicate other factors.

Either way, be careful driving in Portland (and Raceland Louisiana).

  10. I am sitting down here in New Zealand I feel sick to have read this - what a real shame. I wish Dave and his family all the very best and also hopefully the car will live to see another day.

Didnt this car also have a freeway accident leading to Brizio rebuilding the car for Dave?

Anyway, it may explain why I have not heard from Dave when I emailed him to talk about the car as I have always wanted to do a similar car.

Hope for a speedy recovery for Dave and Wife.

Yeah the winds can wreck havoc. We get plow overs all the time on the I-8 up around alpine.
The other day going up sripps parkway I was pushed across the lanes ON MY MOTORCYCLE!

If big buisness has their way the highways will only get worse.

They want to increase maximum weight for tractor trailers from 80,000 pounds to 97,000 pounds, of course we (the drivers) get to haul the extra weight for free.

My prayers go out to everyone involved..............sad, hate to hear stuff like this.

Dave was on the cruise down to Del Mar with us and decided to head home early to avoid the weather. I heard the news on Saturday and wanted to throw up. We were all just glad he was alive.

    Scary stuff!

  16. I hear yah . . . I'm going to put a 60's style roll-bar in my 34 coupe . . . for exactly the same reason! It has Hurst slicks in the back and Firestone style grooved fronts. I believe that if I was driving that area on CA in bad weather, that it would be a chore to handle. ( I lived in LA for 35 years - that road can be HELL!).

Another thing to think about is how good is your steering and front suspension setup? I've seen plenty of guys running old and worn-out worm and sector type steering boxes . . . that are very difficult to handle. Yes, you can use them, but buy gosh you better keep awake, aware and not even think about relaxing at the wheel -- especially on I-5 in that region. This is even more true if you're running bias ply tires on those damned grooved cement CA highways. (Not saying he was asleep at the wheel by any means!).

Hope he heals up . . . the car can always be fixed, it is his body/health that matters.

At about 12:30 yesterday, Dave and other street rodders were driving home from the Del Mar car show. As they were driving west from Los Banos to connect to I5, Dave's 32 roadster went off the road, flipped a few times and landed upside down (it's an open car without a roll bar). A couple of good samaritans rendered first aid by getting Dave out of the car and stemming the bleeding. By the time the CHP and paramedics got there, he was already receiving first aid. He was airlifted out to Fresno Regional Community Hospital which has a trauma unit.

I am so thankful for Dave's network of friends who have shown their love and support and kept each other updated with the my small stream of information.

Dave sustained major trauma to his right arm: crushed artery, 4 major lacerations, lost some skin on bicep, so he was bashed up pretty badly plus some broken ribs, minor cuts and abrasions on left hand and head. I arrived just prior to surgery, and he was alert, could move his right fingers, blood was flowing to the right hand which were all good signs that surgery could be successful, and he was making a few jokes. His biggest concern, besides the car, was that he lost his cell phone and glasses.

Surgery went well. They repaired the artery by doing a bypass using a vein from his groin. His tendons and nerves looked OK, and they cleaned out all the wounds.

When I saw him this morning, his right arm is heavily bandaged and his hand is swollen. His left fingers are a little swollen, but all fingers are moving well. He looks like hell, of course, and is having his pain managed, but I think his caregivers are handling it to his and my satisfaction.

He's been in a neck brace since his rescue, and as of this afternoon we found out the MRI shows that he has a fracture in cervical vertebrae 5 and 6. Dave doesn't want to have them fused and lose range of motion in his neck, so we will find out tomorrow what his options are when the orthopedic surgeon comes in.

When I was informed of the accident by a fellow street rodder, I thought I would be driving to Fresno to pick up Dave who had a broken arm. This is much much more serious. He will heal, but it will take some time. The staff thinks he will be in the hospital at least a week. Now that the neck is involved with possibly more surgery, it may be longer. We don't know at this point.

He's at Fresno Regional Community Hospital on Fresno Street in Fresno. Trauma unit room T527 (as of today; they may move him anytime). He has a phone in his room, but he can't answer it. I'm driving back down tomorrow morning and will be there Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. So if I'm there, I'll answer the phone. Or you can call me on my cell phone 925-216-9149.

    Love to you all,
    Linda

Any rodder's worst nightmare; flipping in there own car. Thank you for the update Linda, and all the best to Dave --speedy recovery

And deepest condolences to the family of Bob Cano. So very, very sad.

Things like this shouldn't happen... but they do. Reminds us how important it is to keep both hands on the wheel. We're not Superman.

Ok...from the story posted, it says that Bob Cano "succumbed to his injuries". That leads me to believe that he did not survive. This is a real shame. My prayers and sympathies go out to the families involved.

I think that may be partially true but to blame all the ruts on studded tires is just crap.

The major cause and contributor to wide ruts are heavy trucks. Period.

First I hope Dave is working into a speedy recovery and all works out to 100%. Glad he has made it through the initial bad spot. The car is a shame but the best news is Dave is going to be here for a long time. Thank you Darryl for the up-date.

But as for you dumb ass guys who turned this thread into an argument about trucks and studded tires would you please pull your lower lip over your head and swallow. Not the place for that kind of discussion.

Yes - we all hope for a speedy recovery for Dave and hope his wife has the support she'll need too as it will be hard on her as well. Note: I have a titanium plate (with 6 sheet metal screws) across 3 vertebrae in my neck (similar damage) and I have full range of motion. There is hope. Take care out there.

  30. Glad to hear hes gonna be ok.

So what happened to Bob Cano? Were thinking of his family and friends too
