  1. Actually no, 3 paychecks 1200 bucks at Part time we got paid every 2 weeks.. thats a month and a half.. I worked at Wendys and i was 16 it was in 1996 and the old car i wanted was sitting for sale just out the window next to the wendys in a lot for sale and for a month and a half i had to watch as people would stop and look at it as i was trying to save up a month and a half salary to get it for myself. I wish there were jobs out there today where i could bring home 400 bucks a week part time let alone in 96

Since you got his info, contact him and put him onto hamb classifieds. I bought my panel cheap. I to like to see the younger kids expressing their ideas in building old iron. You will be in his conversations years to come.......especially to his grandkids.

Ah well. The kid will find something if he is genuine. I'm 18, I've owned plenty of nice cars and plenty of junk over the last 5 years. Some I kept and some I flipped. I was raised in poverty and bought them with my own money that I got by trading. Grandpa helped me move them here and there and taught me about how to wrench and "hold onto my money".

I've seen some beautiful cars deteriorate into junk because the owner won't sell them. '57 Chevy convertible with a tree growing through it, a '78 Trans Am turn into a moss covered pile because the owners think everyone that trys to buy it has it sold for $5000. I've also had people get pissed off at me because I'm "letting those old cars waste away", that are sitting in mowed level ground, about a couple hundred feet from our shop.

  8. hmm seems no one thought he was scopin out a theft.. at that age his record could be pretty clean until his"awsome" big score ... "you"

He's probably seen Gran Torino, and knows better than to mess with some old guy's cars.

I think alot of the young guys just don't use the correct words when it comes to asking or what they are going to build. Alot of youngsters will say ratrod instead of hot rod because they don't have experiance in building a nice car or the funds probably. He might turn out as a future builder of nice cars or he might give up, or build something unsafe, who knows, but I'm with some of the other guys on here as far as introducing him to the hamb, so that he can see some real world cars and get educated before he starts his find.

Why do people assume that everything has a price????

Its OK to ask once, but when I say no, I mean NO. I'm happy to show you what I have, and to have you come back and bench race and hangout, and if I decide to sell, you'll probably be the first one that I call because we've developed a rapport.

I had some guy a couple of weeks ago trying to buy one of my family "heirloom" cars, that is not for sale at any price. After I told him its not for sale, and even explained why, he would not leave it (or me) alone. He's not someone that I would ever call if I do have something to sell. He poisoned the water. Just a cautionary tale to keep in mind as you hunt for projects.

I am a young guy (21) and I have actually done pretty well with my automotive findings lately. Sure, I have come across some people saying stuff is not for sale, but that is part of the game. Even if I know some of the cars are going to rot there is nothing I can do about it, so there is no sense fretting about it. I myself have a few trucks and tractors that I will not sell, because they belonged to my grandpa, so I understand how some people feel. For me just getting to get out and see some old tin is fun, even if I know i cannot buy anything.
As far as definitions, I have found that the term "rat rod" has become very common with all sorts of people and has a vast variety of meanings. So like somebody said earlier, the more questions and answers that are exchanged, the picture becomes clearer. I have come across young guys using it to describe a traditionally built rod, and old guys using it to describe a $&!# pile that should not be on the road...and the other way around and anywhere in between. Usually when I hear it used I try to explain my meaning of the word, and if the person is really talking about building a $&!# pile, I just grin and bear it...maybe trying to make some constructive comments.
I have found as a young guy I am at a distinct disadvantage to being able to get cars and parts off of older guys. A lot of times they assume that I want to rat rod something. Other times I have to convince people that they will have something worth me looking at. I cannot even count how many farms I have stopped at after seeing what they had out in the tree lines, and then having to convince the owner that I could probably dig up something of interest (like my 1929 Model A Sedan). Usually they think I am crazy, but agree to let me walk around anyways. Once I offer them money for what in their mind is junk they then know I am crazy, but still agree and take my money before I change my mind. Knowing how to present yourself and how to talk (especially how to listen) are crucial if you are a young guy trying to round up cars and parts. From the car you drive, the way you approach the door, to the way you go about asking them about their "stuff"...everything has to be just right if you want to increase your chances of success. I have learned to ask lots of questions, and LISTEN to the answers, even if it is just BS'ing that has nothing to do with what you are there for. Hopefully this helps somebody out.

  14. Wise post from a young guy.... I am young(er), 29, and even people I think should know better call shit that is clearly not a rat rod, exactly that...... It is just a name for something that has spread like wildfire..... Kind of like one time I was in Louisiana when I was about 12 or so..... I asked for a "Pop" and the guy freaked out on me..... How the hell was i sposed to know they called it "soda" in the south? Also, everything was a "Coke".... "Hey, what kind of Coke do you want?" ...."Pepsi"...... Just like the rat-rod thing...... It is a dirty word, but has spread far and wide, and I dont think it can be stopped!

  16. Send him to us. Everything has a price on it, and we don't care if you're young, old, smart, stupid, gay, straight, white, black, purple with yellow spots, as long as you have the right amount of money - and that's green. What you do with it once it leaves is your business, saw at least one my buddy sold end up not only in the scrapyard, but of two, the one that doesn't sell parts... and it was drivable when it left.

People always seem to trust me more when I drive a truck, like that I may actually have a job and some common sense. I've been stuck driving a mint '89 Delta 4-door with black spray painted jeep wheels (They bolted up, the stock 14s were bald) for the last 4 months. City folk love the damn thing, but you just can't work out of a car.

Better not follow this with how did we lose our younger generation to tuner cars?? I hope he hounds you every 6months for one...:) lmao

  19. I wheel and deal cars and parts, but when a young kid is interested there is always a special deal or freeby part for him. I am just so happy to see a young guy interested in old cars. I will also spend the time to bs with them and part with what little knowledge I have. I always give away models or hot wheels or books to kids at my swap meet booth too. Good to hook them when they are young. Cars have been a great hobby to me. Met a lot of good people. Pat.

  20. I kinda agree that this WAS your chance to teach the kid the errors of his ways and may be show him what a true HOTROD is/was and if you dont wanna getoff your stuff help him track down something,Hell I dont know how many times Ive tried to help out some one tryin to get into this no matter the age and Ive got a thing where if a kid I know is really into the rods and can swing the bucks for stuff and I got something laying around that will help or just maybe get their hopes up I give it to them, kinda a pay it forward thing..........JMO

    From Johnny1290:

Oldpaint had some cars in the backyard he's going to build and didn't sell them to some kid, and found the irony in that he was the guy saying NFS now. I thought it was kinda funny.

What's he sposed to do, give some random kid one of his cars for cheap so he can flip it? Teach this stranger's kid about cars at the cost of not spending time with his own kids?

Jeez you all are pretty free with someone else's property and time...

    Couldn't agree more.

And BTW, if I sell something to anyone, I could care less what they do to it, they could buy my '36 and make it a RatRod, 4 wheeler, or pimp it out for all I care...I got my money, they got thier truck.

In fact I sold a older Browning over and under trap gun to a guy a few years ago for his sons first shotgun...asked where he should take it to get the barrels shortened and rechoked and the stock cut down...I said I don't know..as he left I just smiled, guy spent 1800 bucks on a beautiful shotgun to to take it somewhere and screw it up.

Kind of like giving the snot nosed kid from across the street a ride in your Vette when you got it going. I still remember that ride. Getting on I5 at Capitol Hwy and barreling down toward Barbur. It made an impression.

I had a guy do the same thing to me in 1992. He was gonna restore it some day. The car is still there. If he comes back like he should, sell em something and get him started. You'll just watch them rot away if ya don't.

Well. Here's what I did. I'm not an old fart (44 now). About 4 years ago this kid stops at my house and rings the bell while I'm at work. My wife answers and this kid asks about my cars etc etc etc. She said he seemed really nice and polite and invited him to come back when I was home. I took my wife's word because she's really particular about the people she associates with. So a couple weeks later he comes back and we talk and shoot the shit and my wife's right... he turns out to be a really nice kid, but no I don't have anything for sale right now. In my driveway I had an unfinished 60 El Camino, in the garage was that black 59 Impala convertible, and in the back yard was my 64 Chevy truck. So 6 or 8 months pass by and I'm trying to finish the 60 El Camino to get it out of my way. I lost contact with the kid. So one day I decide I don't like the 283 in the 60 El Camino and decide to swap it out. I go to Hertz to rent an engine hoist and LO AND BEHOLD... the kid works there. So we get to talking and I ask him if he can do body and 'good enough paint' and he said yes.

Long story short... he helped me finish that 60 El Camino. He would even show up and work on it when I was at work!! Once I went on vacation for a week and came home and he had mowed my lawn. Needless to say, I was pretty much flabbergasted (is this an old people's word?!). In the end, I GAVE him my 64 Chevy truck. He's been working on it and having fun and in his words "It runs hella good!".

Now... He's a part of my life and he's doing fantastic. I now have him putting together my 59 Impala 2-door hardtop and in return I am giving him a 60 2-door Bel Air, a 60 El Camino (another one...), all of my parts stash for everything related to 60 Chevrolets, my extra 283, all my transmissions... EVERYTHING.

The kid deserves it. I got lucky... and why? because I talked with him and worked with him and it all turned out good.

I wish the same luck for other people like me who come across a kid like this.

Anyway. Here's a picture of the finished project. When it was started, it had no front clip, no windshield, no drivetrain, etc. Turned out real nice.

  26. I am a young kid (19). Anyways I would just like to say I think you made a mistake. I mean I used to call traditional hot rods rat rods until I came on the HAMB and you guys taught me. It would have been cool if you could have taught him about real hot rods. I love talking rods with the older guys and hearing all their glory days stories. Would have been cool if you got the kid into traditional hot rods!

  27. What a cool story!
