who is using a vintage pickup to tow a trailer?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by inliner54, Nov 15, 2009.

  1. Kool thread, as I'm building a 40 ford pickup as a daily driver and to tow my flathead on the long trips.

    Merry Christmas to ALL.

  2. Is there a way to put in a hidden hitch on a 59 Chevrolet truck while keeping the stock rear bumper?

This belongs to a buddy. He needed both cars at this event and didn't want to bring his pickup too and have to shuffle three cars home. So he hooked his car trailer up to his A coupe.

its all in the suspension too little on the tung and your rear wheels will be light too much on the tung and your fronts will be light my peterbilt with trailer wheighs 25700.then add 54000 pounds of 300 degre liquid so make sure your suspension can level your load

Great minds think alike. I picked up my 72 F250 Camper Special for a tow/shop truck.

  11. Here's my '57 ford pulling my flatbed, and my '64 Aristocraft.

The TH350 trans is a little too light duty for towing, but I'm planning a TH400 soon.

Years ago dad had a 66 Dodge 3/4 ton camper special pickup. With the poly 318, granny 4 speed and the 4:10 dana, it would drag anything anywhere, and stopped pretty well.

My current driver is a 50 Dodge on an 80 Dodge 1/2 ton 4x4 chassis. At 4650 lbs, it does pretty good at towing things as well, but the short box frame makes a little rough ride.

Like most things, if your properly set up and pay attention to what your doing, your probably not going to have problems. Gene

We've been known to use my old truck when we have something REALLY heavy to move! These old Fords work great but you have to really watch how you load the trailer with a wheelbase this short......Ask me how I know!

Edit 1/30/2011: The truck is on the road now, still needing good wheels and tires.

back in 69-70 i had a 62 c20 with 261 6 and 4sp trans. i towed cars and other trailers up and down the east cost with no problems at all. now every one thinks you need a 4wd dually to tow a little car trailer.

i haul tractors a-c d15 and a j-d crawler on my cr trailer with a 79 short bed chevy with a 307 4sp. with out problems.

Good evening, can you tell me more about the trailer your grandfather built? A friend just gave me an identical looking trailer, even to the style of the tailgate, for helping him fix up and paint his 1898 barn. It looks like a 1935 Dodge pickup bed but I'm new at this. Dusty and Lefty

Here is my '54 1/2 ton that I have used for 30yrs. Bought it from a farmer in WY who built the super strong
rear bumper and hitch for it. Have pulled trailers with cars on it, huge pine trees and lots of stuff. Has never
failed me. Motor is stock 6cyl with 3.90 gears and granny low. Sometimes speed was only 45mph, but it's been just what I have needed. 54 truck 2.JPG

I have 4 vintage Ford Pickups that I could Tow with, but from what I have found, classic insurance will not cover towing or hauling. So instead, I will use my COE, to haul my 29 roadster pickup, or 24 track roadster, in the box, and tow the Airstream, with a standard insurance policy. IMG_5658.JPG IMG_6933.JPG

In my search for an insurance company to insure my '46 pickup while towing I had the same problem. I finally got Haggerty to agree to insure it while towing only if I also insured my enclosed Haulmark trailer AND the race car I planned to tow with them. Go figure.

So, what's the deal? They don't like the truck towing something or they don't want to be responsible for the contents being towed? I assume it is the latter. I have Haggerty, that's why I am curious.

Yep, Marty, I had it for awhile... I saw it advertised for sale one time and could never find it again.
    Probably a good thing.;):D

It was Mike Thompson up Portland way that really did a bang up job of bringing the old warrior back to life.

I just rounded up a bunch of the previous owners and had a "Coupe Day" reunion in Ringgold, GA. It was a fantastic gathering. Red Stanley was the legendary driver of the coupe back in the day... and he's still hot rodding!
Sharp as a tack... reminds me of Isky.

I bought it from Mike and then had the reunion while I had it a few years then a fashion designer/hot rodder bought it and took it to CA.

It was an awesome car to drive... another one I let get away... the dang pickup too!:(

Mike is a member of a local club "The Estranged", they operate like a group from the 40's-50's. They find and refurbish old drag cars and Hotrods, helping each other to source the unique cars and parts, and get them back in action. The good part is, they drive and race the hell out them, as it should be.

Old thread but what the hell... My '55 F100 did duty as a tow vehicle for years. The idea that "that's all they had back in the golden age so it's gotta work" is a little misleading. There was less traffic, lower speeds and more courteous drivers back then. Drum brakes, bias plies and old steering kept my attention. Now days, if you leave braking space some a-hole dives in there.
So, the old Effie got upgraded with a 302, 9", DB and P/S and served for a few more years. I finally got a new trailer with good brakes, what a difference!
    Headed to Eagle Field....
