Hello, well i found a car last fall on a hunting trip, i should have taken more time to look at but i think its a late twentys of some kind, not sure exactly what condition its in, i was in a hurry and there was 18'' of snow on the ground. I found it sitting on state or federal land in the middle of no where, there isnt anyone who lives around for miles. And by the looks of the area im guessing its been there for a long time. My question is, should i contact someone about it before i go and get it this sunday, maybe the dnr or something. I dont plan on wrecking any trees or anthing to get it out, but i would imagine theres people who would make a stink about it.
I would definitely find out who owns the land and get permission. Would not want to end up with a stiff fine, jail time, or lead shot in my ****. Better safe than sorry in this instance. You never know who is watching.
Yessir! Go to your county seat/etc., find out who owns the land and contact them directly...even if it's Government owned...get your permission in writing.
This is not legal advice at all, but I would just go get it if it's on Federal land. If you ask about, the guy you ask or one of his buddies will get it. Just don't get caught.
You'll never get an answer if you try and get it from the GOVT. Just load up the pieces one at a time and take it home.
Just go get it, and consider it a tax refund. There's no way in hell you'll get permission if you ask.
I gotta agree, private land is another issue. If you get caught, tell them they should be glad you're volunteering your time to clean up the environment. Could you imagine what it would cost the taxpayer to remove that car after the gov does all the environmental impact studies, a hazmat crew for removal, and a study of soil samples before and after, as well as restoration of the site and disposal of the remains. Then there's the long term study to determine if there has been a marked increase in the iron levels of a squirrels nuts!
Tell them your some kind of tree hugger and you think it is better for the environment to get this eyesore off of the beautiful countryside!
Go to the federal office wearing a tree hugger t shirt and hikeing boots.Tellthem you want to help clean up the land for the endangered animals. They may even give you a money grant, and help you.
Wear a Sierra Club T shirt, pack some granola bars and act effeminate and bring a big tarp to cover it up so no one knows what you have under it. Do it quick and get the hell out of there.
'56 Olds Holiday 88.... It's our shop car. Go here for the build thread on the HAMB:http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=393929 Now back to the topic.......
I agree, snag it. If you go through the Govt, you will have red tape, and quite a waiting period. Use the clean up the environment routine if your caught. JMO Lippy
Man oh man, what a problem, Federal land, you could face some nasty issues there and they're correct you'll never get permission either. what a dilemma.
Don't worry about it, you'll spend enough time trying to get the thing registered if you decide to build something out of it.
Put it in the back of your truck and put old tires around it and other rubbish. So it looks like you did a clean up.
It's on federal land. That makes it federal property. You really wanna get busted for stealing government property?
Thank you for that. Very Grade A stuff. As for toogood's question, as long as it is on state/fed property I would say that they don't know or care that it is there and the same could be said about you "transfering ownership". The one thing I would take into account is, does it look like any critters use it for their home or place for hibernation or shelter. A little goofy to think about but helpless animals make me go a big rubbery one. Other than that I say it's yours, you pay state taxes, and some of that money should go to the upkeep and preservation of wilderness and wildlife. You're only doing your part. Just listen to your conscience...as long as it's not a green cricket in a top hat...or was he a gr***hopper? I must also state that I am in NO WAY endorsing the act of THEFT! If by chance you do end up with the car, I have complete faith that you sought out the proper channels in order to possess said vehicle.
Definitely theft of gov't property. Its also a violation of the Antiquities Act regarding unlawful removal of historic objects from federal land (over 50 it qualifies) and possibly the National Historic Preservation Act if it is determined to be part of an archeological site (again over 50 it qualifies). I use to deal with this stuff daily.
I'd check with the proper authorities. Give them a call and ask them if you need a permit for cleaning up an area that was used as a dump site. Tell them it's a shame how some people will just dump there junk on federal land.
