Narrow electric fan for my 1951 Mercury

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Pro Stock John, Apr 14, 2010.

  1. My mechanical fan was not getting it done before, car was running hot. It is not a clutch fan.

My buddy measured and I only have 2.50 deep, 20.5 wide, and 16 tall to work with. Would any pusher fan come to mind for that?

I had a SPAL pull fan on my 31 that was about 2.25. I never had any problem with my flathead running hot at all!

I'm running a large SPAL fan for my Merc and she is real thin and it works great.

Another for the Spal. Nice product. Using one with a flathead and small radiator does just fine.

I had a COOLONG COMPONENTS 17" pulling fan with a shroud that was 2 5/8" thick overall and pulled 2500 cfm, on my '40 ford truck. The shrouds come in different sizes, the fan has curved blades, and you could barely hear it running. They recommend a 70 amp relay,I used a 50 amp relay and put an idiot light on the dash to be able to tell it was running. Walker radiator sells them as well as Speedway and others. Cost was $246.00 + shipping. Hope this helps.

  6. Thanks big time guys!

I had under 3" at the pulley, so I ended up using a 96 ford contour dual fan. No motor in the center so it clears the pulley. I'm on my cell so I don't have a link but if you google contour electric fan a website that sells them pops up and gives all the dimensions.

Best part it was like 35 bucks on half price day at pick a part(they charge you for 2 fans since 2 motors, or at least they did me)

  8. I poked around, I can't seem to find the width of the Contour fans.

John-with the distance you have between the h20 pump and the rad- are you using a long pump? If so,maybe switching to a shortie will give you the needed room. My fan is a derale-2600cfm,puller,4'' deep. I also checked the shelf, and have a new 17'' fan, puller, but it's 3'' deep,so that probably won't help you. Any of the mentioned units above will work out, just stuff the biggest one you can get in there. Good luck-Kid

  10. I'll check on the pump size.

John I use a SPAL 16" puller on my sedan, it barely fits at 2 5/8" thick but in 120 degree desert heat it still runs 195 degrees. Of course I used a different water pump to gain some clearance also...originally I had only 1 3/4" and nothing fit.

When we did Route 66 in July of last year it was 123 degrees when we stopped for lunch in Needles, CA....zowie!!! was it HOT (but the car was cool).

If a good mechanical fan ... with a decent fan and a shroud does NOT keep the engine COOL ...

you will be sorely dissapointed with a electric fan ... IMHO.

You may have tuning issues or airflow issues. Neither will be cured by a electric fan ... :(

SPAL has their fan dimensions in PDF format on the website. For some reason they are all metric measurements but you should be able to convert....they used to be in inches?????

I run a pusher on my model A and it kicks some serious punch.

    John,
The OT v-8 in a jeep guys are running fans from the ford taurus. The v-8 swap radiators are around 22x18 in the core I think. Anyhow, the taurus fan is supposed to be ultra thin I think around 2 1/4 inches and comes with a shroud. It is worth checking out, these guys are running at low speeds on rocks while keeping cool.

  16. Thanks guys, I feel much better about how to fix this now. I was trying to find the dimensions for the Taurus/Contour fans but couldn't readily find any posted online.

First we will swap in an electric fan, and then if there are still issues I will look at upgrading the radiator.
