Maybe before the guy builds a sheet-metal brake he needs something better than a hacksaw to cut that crankshaft. :D

Cutting the crank with a hack saw is priceless, especially one of thoses wimpy grandpa hacksaws. But if time is cheap then a hacksaw works.

  7. Perhaps the Model A stuff could be replaced with something of no value from Japan? :D

That article was written back when men were men. The hacksaw may have seemed wimpy, but Grandpa wasn't.

For those who don't know, Popular Mechanics recently posted all of their magazines on their website with a searchable database. It's really cool to see some of the old articles.

correction: it was popular science, but it's the same type of stuff from back then.

I'm suprised that he wasn't using that old 3 bladed "Old Timer" pocket knife...you know the same one he cleaned out from under his nails with and then peeled an apple right after.

My grandfather did that and it wierded me out when I was a youngster. I saw him use that little brown and tan oldtimer to clean the corrosion off of battery terminals and then cut up his steak right after. There is no telling how many he went through. He was buried with one when he passed. I still have the one he gave me for Christmas when I was 6. I guess it wasn't so odd after all that he did that.
Sorry for the thread theft there. Cool article.

They bought those type hacksaws cause they were cheap :D A proper hacksaw has a very rigid frame that'll tension the blade so it sings. Those wimpy grampa hacksaws are just a place to store a spare saw blade.

Remember, he's only cutting a ford crank. That hacksaw is a bit of overkill...

My mate has a workbench made from a model T chassis. He doesn't even realise what it is coz he's not a car guy.

    So who is building one?

The generation that fought in WWII didn't need a special tool for everything they did. My dad used to make all kinds of neat stuff with a very minimal tool collection. These guys used their head to create solutions , not money. Simple is better, we all could learn something from this.

Cool....but what would be even better.....if they could figure
a way to turn an old sheet metal brake into a Model A Ford
instead of the other way around, they'd really be on to
    something!!! :D
