Wow, oh wow! The crash pictures... He is very, very lucky to be alive.
I've been on the Grapevine plenty of times in bad weather, and it is not to be taken lightly. We were all in shock when we heard the news at the event, and it really hammered home the importance of driving carefully for those who had to head back through the storm.

This is probably one of the last pictures taken of the roadster from Friday... beautiful car... and one lucky man.

    Man that blows..
sure hope this is a wake up call for some of us..
hope the healing is quick and the pain is over soon.
them dam roadsters shure look bitchin with no roll bars, but i think if i owned one, i would find a way to live with the look of having one.

Received some photos of Dave's car after the accident. I'm not posting these to be morbid, but as a warning to all to PLEASE be careful! If this offends anyone I will quickly remove them.

Life on the road is a scale of risk. Riding a motorcyle puts you high up on the scale. Driving a roadster with no cage puts you only a few rungs down. Driving a modern sedan with air bags and stability control puts you much farther down.

We all pay our monies and take our chances. Hopefully we all know what risks we are assuming when we get out on the road. That being said there is no doubting the coolness of a roadster. I wonder how many have considered a well-engineered bolt-in cage that can be removed for shows or when the mood strikes?

In any case, may God bless Dave and speed his recovery.

    Sobering isn't the word........

Hope Dave makes a full and speedy recovery from this.

I noticed the car had what looks like a partial cage in it, can only imagine if it didn't, looks like he had a seat belt on also, lots to learn here.

I noticed that too. Looks like a cage more to stiffen the chassis than to protect occupants to me, but none-the-less our friend Dave survived! Get well soon Dave!

  11. You will all notice that the passenger compartment is intact. It looks like Dave hit the steering wheel pretty hard. I am not sure if a roll bar would have given Dave much more protection than the all ready stiffened body it self did.
I am wondering what Dave hit to tear the front end completely out of the car??
Myself I was lucky that i went under the dash when I rolled my roadster.

  13. I am amazed how far from the road he ended up, especially after hitting those good sized fence posts. Really makes you think!!!!

Dave's car was essentially built as a race car with most of the safety features sans an overhead rollbar. Thank goodness for that.

I know the Legion Special would not fare anywhere as well.

when I was taking pics of the car I noticed the roll bars inside it and I thought at that time " I wonder why they didn't put a loop bar over your head"
I don't know if Dave would have made out any better or not if it had the top bar but I thought the car would have looked just fine with the top bar.
but I like cars that have the racecar look to them.

Like the others have said here "Get well soon Dave"... Ron...

When it is rebuilt, maybe this roll bar should go back in ?

  18. Here's a pic of the original chassis (with fixed/welded rollcage):

Later, Boyce (or maybe Dave) made the rollcage removeable:

That basically explains why he's still with us.

That's a full race chassis right there, holy cow, can't get any safer than that

It's a full tube frame w/ faux 32 frame rails attached to sides. Still one of my favorite 32's of all time.
Originally- the cage & loop were all welded in. At some point- the loop was made removeable by bolting it in. Not sure what configuration it was in after it was restored. It's in pretty good shape for what it went through.
I believe the best run Boyce had in the car was 8.72 @ 158 mph.
    Hoping for a speedy recovery.

I posted get well wishes for Dave earlier today. Seeing photos of the chassis now explains why he survived. Is that a Ford or Brookville body?

Ford I guess, the car was built in 1989, don't think Brookville was doing bodies then.

I believe he's an L.A. Roadster member, if I have that right. If so, it's gotta be a Ford.

An amazing car...runs high 8's? I can't even imagine a street car doing that...but it did.
I have a hunch it'll be back...there's lots of talent that could bring that car back to life.
And there's tons of talent in skilled doctor's hands, too. Modern medicine is absolutely amazing. So, I'm betting on a great outcome for the man and the machine...:)
