Just picked up a helluva motor for my '55 Chevy G***er project....I had been ac***ulating a bunch of rare M/T stuff to build a mid 60s crossram motor, but this new find is making me change my mind. Story goes that a local guy walks into a local boutique race engine shop and spends $4600 building this motor in late 1971. The engine was never used and it sat in his garage all this time. The original owner died and a friend of the family ended up with it and I got it from him. All the parts used to build the motor were brand new ...the block which is a 350 4 bolt main was new, as was the 492 angled plug 2.02 heads and steel crank were all GM over the counter. Has Forgedtrue pistons, ****s rings, Carillo rods, Milodon gear drive, roller cam with rev kit and a Crower injection setup....I have heard that injection is hard to run on the street. I have seen the other threads here by Alkydigger and others so dont worry about posting for support on running the injection on the street...I intend to do that. The engine turns over like ****er by hand so I dont think I will even pull the heads. Its just cool that this engine was last run on a dyno in 1971, broken in and never put into anything....just thought you guys might like to have a look at it....check out the orange rubber balls in the injector stacks...still have the dime store price of 33 cents on them...by the way...I LOVE THIS SITE...I spend hours here!!

Get ahold of "Rotten Johnny" he runs one of these on the street. Maybe he can give some pointers. Nice score by the way. Todd

That is a nice score!! If it were mine, I'd do the once over on the torque specs on the whole motor before installing it between your frame rails. The pan and valve cover gaskets need to replaced anyway from sitting so long. That's damn near 40 years old.

Yeah...I will check it over before putting it in..just didnt want to pull the heads off etc....I was told it was broken in on the dyno and everything was retorqued and the valves were set before the power pulls. It has a pretty mild cam and a mild setup on the injection...it was being built for a newbie racer and the engine had more potential than it was delivered at. It dynoed at 550 horses....with about 75-100 more hp possilble with a bigger cam and more aggressive fi setup....

I agree with something like this making the whole car...it is the next best thing to finding a real g***er with its original race motor setup...at least the engine will be "real"

    Craig...thanks!!

Great find, that thing looks like 2500hp just sitting there. Do yourself a favor and pull the heads. Unless someone lubed it up and backed off the rockers something will stick and you'll be pulling them after you bend a valve or two. It just happened to me last year on a set of 3 year old heads that had been sitting in the shop office, 1 sticky valve. Might as well replace those 40 year old springs too.

Bill.....your heads probably had a tight guide to begin with...but I will check it all out before hand...squirt some oil everywhere and turn it by hand a few times to make sure its all good...its been inside a garage all this time...with a cover over the injection setup and the throttle blades closed of course and paper towels wadded up and stuck in the exhaust ports. I think it was sealed up pretty good...also dont forget that I am in Socal...its pretty dry out here....

  16. Nice find, I have that exact Crower injector setup and a set of the 1492 heads also. Rotten Johnnie runs those crowers also and has great advice and a cool deuce.:)

Valve springs sitting under compression for 30+ years are guaranteed to fail...end of story...replace the valve springs so you don't have to build a $5k replacement motor to save $80 on valve springs...seriously, you'd be stupid NOT to do it...

You are correct about my heads, but if I had done a quick tear down I would have known that. I let the pistons check the valves instead. It barely bent a valve kinda like barely pregnant. Hell your dying to look at those 70's popup pistons anyway. Here's one I just finished for my FED ( not the one that had a sticky valve ) Stack injection is the ****!!!!

Bill....this motor was put together by a boutique race engine builder..I think he built one engine a month. I will check it all out dont worry...but the thing turns over by hand like ****er. Plus it was broken in and dynoed...it was run after being built. Its not good for some parts of the engine (like valve springs) to sit that long...I know that....those will be addressed but my goal is to leave as much of it together as possible to preserve it. I dont have to pull the heads to see the pistons...they are Forgedtrue 11.5-1 pop ups......your engine looks cool...I guess I will have to run a belt driven fuel pump to be able to run a harmonic balancer...thanks to all for the nice comments!

Johnny Rotten...your car and motor are bad***...I would love to hear that thing run...no youtube videos?

Bill...thanks for the input buddy...I will start a buildup thread when I get closer to starting on it...dont want it to drag on for years...but I already have a 57 Olds rearend that is narrowed about 5 inches...I am going to switch the leaf springs side for side....I have some old 15x10 ET Torq Thrust style mags to run on the back. My brother in law is a certified welder so he can help out on the frame stubs/straight axle part...all the parts are coming together...now need to get money to actually build the thing...the good thing is that most of it is already here...
