Currently I have a 1964 Dodge Polara with a 318 polyhead under the hood, this is the original engine, but the trans is a donor from supposedly a 60's imperial with a 413 attached to it. I have no idea if the bellhousing should have been a different size between the 318 Poly and the 413. If that's the case then it shouldn't mount up to an LA block 318 should it? Reason being is that another member of my car club gave me a 1976 318 and I'm wanting to temporarily use it while I rework the polyhead or possibly go with a 383 just to be different... So will the push****on trans mount up to the LA black 318 or is the bellhousing pattern between it and the polyhead going to be different?
    Thanks in advance!

Different patterns between big/small block Mopars. Crank flange issues on pre '62
engines also. If indeed you have a big block trans it won't work with the 318.

That's exactly what I was thinking, my brothers old car that I took over, so I have no idea what all is going on with it, he just abandoned the old girl, but if i remember correctly the trans and 413 were from the same car, so I'm confused as to how that would even be possible because its currently mounted to the 318 poly in the car. It's all gonna come out for a rebuild but I'd like to figure this out so I can start tracking down a new trans now if need be. Engine and trans are all 64 btw. thanks for the fast response!

  4. If the trans is alumium it is ok for the car but still wrong for the Small block. (318s are small blocks and despite the big heads on the polly the basic casting is simlar blockwise. )
You mentioned going to a 383 maybe. Might i suggest if your going big block go all the way with a 440 . You only live once, dont hold back.

I have a '64 Poly in my sedan. Just drove it for the 1st time last week. I have a '76 SB 727... easy to find cheap. Bolted right up. My wife has a 383 w/ BB 727... as stated, diff bell housing... still easy to find. type 727 in auto parts on Craigslist... they are there all the time.
    Good luck man

As was said, if it is bolted up it's a sb ******, & any 904/727 sb from a newer than '62 will work. If you go bb, you'll need a diffrent ******.

Big blocks (B and RB) use one bellhousing pattern, small blocks another. No interchange!

50's iron case transmissions had no park. Aluminum cases in 60 (904) or 62 (727). Up through 65 these were cable actuated. Later transmissions were lever, not cable.
66 had a front pump, earlier ones had the rear pump.
A 64 Polara with a 318 poly should have a small block transmission with a cable shift and a rear pump.
Here is a picture of a cable shift. A lever shift will have a stub sticking out of the round cast area at the top of the bulge where the cable is attached in the picture.

Also you have a poly engine not a LA engine - big difference - LA engine runs the same bellhousing pattern but runs a totally different head/valve layout

Ok, to clear the air on this. I know that I have a poly engine, that was stated, and I know the bellhousing sizes between BB and SB is different, I just didn't know if the block size between the Poly and the LA block was different enough that would have to run a different trans when swapping to an LA block 318. I truly appreciate all the responses so quickly though, and I hate to come off as being rude on it, just wanted to clear up my meaning on the question. Thanks again for all the responses

Hey RODSTRACE you might be the guy I need to talk to. I have a 56 Dodge Hardtop. W/orignal drivetrain. I want to update it. I have a 383 out of a 1964 sport Fury, and a 727 out of a 62 Chrysler. I want to retain my push****ons in car. Will these two 383 & 727 mate with no problem??
