need to replace a key mechanism in a gm tilt column- is there any special trick or special tools need to do it?-thanks, pat
Remove wheel, remove column lock plate then you should be able to see the bolt that holds the lock cyl.Remove the bolt and the cyl should pull out.
That was the condensed version...not incorrect by any means. Some detail if you've never seen this done. After removing the wheel, you'll be looking at the lock plate, which looks like a Chinese throwing star if its not plastic coated. This needs to be pressed down to remove a snap ring. There is a tool that screws down over the steering shaft that has two arms to push down the plate. (Like 15 bucks at chain parts stores) Then use a pick and a small screwdriver to dig out the ring. You can have a buddy push down on the plate too, but make quick with the ring. He wont be able to hold it forever. Pull that off, then remove the turnsignal lever and hazard knob. Then remove the screws for the turnsinal switch. You'll have to switch it back and forth to get to the screws. You should be able to pull it out of the way of the set screw for the switch. It may be a Torx head. Pull it and switch is out. Have fun!
You didn't say whether you have a lumpy column or a round column: they're different as to key removal. All the above is for a lumpy column. For a round column, dis***emble as above (if this is a tilt-tele, PM me), when you have gotten the TS unit out, turn the switch to the "RUN" position, then, insert a small screwdriver into slot next to the TS mounting screw boss. Depress lock cylinder retaining tab and pull out lock cylinder. Cosmo
Local key shop will install a new key lock with two keys for $25. That is if you carry it in the shop. Something to think about.
