    got my walking papers today.
my ex-company is pretty much bass-ackwards from the rest of the world...
lay offs come when the economy improves; their ass holes shrink to the size of mustard seeds.
(a rise in intrest rates spells the end of the re-fi boom, and if real-estate appraisers have less money so does the company)
wish me luck as i reenter to fold...

  2. Sorry to hear that man. Our company is so full of rumors right now, everything from laying off 60 people to moving out of state. I wish the bastards in charge would just tell us wtf is going on...

Hang in there, it'll get better.

really sorry to hear that man, my only advice, having once been through that, is if you are going to change careers, thnk about wht you REALLY wouldlove to do (other than be a rock star or sultan) and then go for it. if it works out it is great, and if it don't, you still feel good that you gave it all you could. hope things work out man

Tis the season - I got the same news last year in October, and now those that were left are getting the news this year (construction sucks)I ended up better off, but at the time i hated it.
I think if anyone makes it through October you have a less likely chance of being chopped -

    Good luck to ya

There's going to be a lot of construction work in the So. Cal. Mountains as soon as the insurace checks come in.

    It's a thought anyway...

If they told you, you would find a new job before they were through making money from your work and skill.

They all have to make it such a secret, what a bunch of shit. When I got laid off they wouldn't tell me about it on the phone, not even a hint. I got a message on Tuesday, and called them back. The HR lady screens her calls, because she didn't answer but called me back in about 30 seconds. "Mr. Deyo, could you come down to the main office on Thursday?" I said, "Yes, is everything" she cut me off with "Thank you?" CLICK.
So, one guy that had been with the company for about 15 years was set to go on vacation the following day, so he COULDN'T meet with them on Thursday. Instead he met with them that day and came back to tell us all what was going on. Why the secrets? I realize that some people might freak out, but instead you get people all worked up for 2 days THEN you give them the axe? They should have made the trip from the front office themselves and told everyone on that day, if they were that worried.
At first I was a little pissed and confused. "Why me?" I thought. That lasted for about 30 seconds. Then it sunk in...Wait a minute...I can move out of this SHITTY city (Boston), away from the SHITTY rude people that live here, and the state is going to pay me so I can relax while I look for a new job, and I can move across the country to somewhere that resembles paradise?
Mister, you've got yourself a deal.

Oh, yeah, I forgot the best part, Ian reminded me. I worked in construction. Week after week we'd get the lists of bids that the company kept losing. I think they won maybe 12 bids in the last 10 months that I was there, and mostly for little stuff. The job I was on was a $400 Million contract. The only stuff they'd win were $25,000 air conditioning installations or cleaning out sewer pipes ans such. Well, that suggests to me that the people in the estimating/bidding deptartments are the problem, right. More work, more people need to keep their jobs.

NONE of the estimaters were let go.

    Sorry to hear that Cliff.

George, you got a line on any decent jobs over your way?

I lost my job due to being deployeed to Active duty. We were under a contract there at NODA, and the law states that if you wouldve normally ben unemployeed from that company, they dont have to do anythign for you. And, since Im here, I didnt get picked up as staff by the company that did get the contract.
Oh yeah, my degree is in Psychology....so jobs are fewer and further between.

Sorry boutcher job man. But don't feel so bad about the incompetant's. They're rampant at my factory job too where we're being threatened with closure if we don't accept the company's ultimatum which basically nullifies our union. I say FUCK EM. CLOSE my plant, send my job overseas, retrain my ass so I can work in a Wal-Mart economy without wanting to BLOW SHIT UP!!!! Damn, do I sound bitter? I haven't even actually Lost my job yet! Meanwhile we continue to lose business bids based on cosmetic and engineering unacceptability, so of course it must be an hourly labor problem, Right?!!? OF COURSE!!!!

HEY, We could always get a degree and a lobotomy, then we'd be fully employable as office workers with no skill or talent for our jobs...only labor oriented employee's need Those things...

Rooster, that last message explains why I still have a job in security... [IMG]

We've had lots of layoffs here too, but everytime I run across someone who used to work here, they all seem to have improved their lot and they wouldn't come back. Hope it works that way for you too.

  18. yeah, like it was said before, they won't clue us in beforehand, because they are worried someone will go postal. Instead, they start moving milling machines, lasers and other lathes and shit to our other plant, and letting us speculate what is going on. And I heard on CNN radio news that the economy is up... figures!

Years ago.......I was the assistant superintendant at a tool and die plant. I had the very unpleasant task of letting a few folks go......( Texiles jobs went to the Dogs in the early 70's ) ........

We would figure up their check $$$, walk out to their work station and and tell them to load their tool box. We walked them to the door and handed them the check. [IMG] [IMG]

We kept them in the dark until axe time. This was to keep them from damaging the work or the equipment.

It is not pleasant .......... on either side.

I work for the government now.........no layoffs in over 25 years......... [IMG]

retrain my ass so I can work in a Wal-Mart economy

I sincerely hope that Wal-Mart starts collapsing from their own growth. The assholes built a Super Center in my small town of 11,000 several years ago and within a year two Grocery stores, a Kmart, and a Hardware store were out of business.

This is with three other Wal-Mart Super Centers within a 25 mile radius! I have heard that the Bastards are even putting in small convenience type stores in some of the big cities and running off the little Mom and Pop stores that have been there for ages.

Wouldn't be quite as bad if they were providing gainful employment, but all the time you hear stories about them. Like working employees 39 hours a week to keep from paying benefits, and pressuring employees to work overtime off the clock.

    Boys......I discovered 10 years ago,that working for ANY company,SUCKS.
I have been self employed ever since and have NEVER been happier.....
My job is 10 foot outside my back door. I do what I want, when I want, if I want, and nothing more!
IF I happen to get bored,I walk to my house, and turn on SPEEDVISION for an hour or so..........
OR pet my dogs,MOW THE LAWN.......
    OR drink a BEER!!!!
Bottom line? Figure out what you WANT to do,NOT what you HAVE to do,and go for it.
    You'll live a lot longer.
    Good luck,God Bless.

    Editorial

Wal-Mart shows evidence of "collective psychopathy" when it takes employee exploitation to ghoulish heights with "dead peasant" life insurance policies.

    by

    R.H. Meyer

In violation of Texas law, Wal-Mart has been taking out life insurance policies on its employees without their knowledge and naming the company as beneficiary. Another prominent user of these "dead peasant" insurance policies is, you guessed it, Enron. The difference between the Enron and Wal-Mart in this matter is that Enron didn't break Texas Law as did Wal-Mart. In Texas, it is illegal for any person or company to take out a life insurance policy on any other person without telling the person first. Wal-Mart chose to ignore Texas law when it took some 350,000 dead peasant policies on employees, including Texas employees, without telling them.

The arrogance of Wal-Mart in purchasing these policies in defiance of Texas law is almost beyond belief. The ghoulishness of this practice speaks to the utter disregard - indeed contempt - that Wal-Mart holds for its "associates". Executives enriching themselves on the death of their employees. How low can one sink?

I wonder how secure Mr.Coughlin and the rest of the executives and directors of Wal-Mart would feel if Wal-Mart employees started purchasing life insurance on them without their knowledge. Do you think it might give them cause for concern? There's a reason the "insurable interest" doctrine in exists in Texas*. And, there is need for a similar doctrine at the federal level.

Several years ago Wal-Mart embarked on a television ad campaign featuring older semi-retired employees in an apparent attempt to recruit older folks into their employ. Is it possible that Wal-Mart valued its older "associates" in a more sinister way?

Conclusion: Wal-Mart is a company without a conscience. If Wal-Mart was a person, the terms "psychopath" or "sociopath" would apply. But Wal-Mart is a corporation, an "artificial person" under the law. So, in Wal-Mart's case, there seems to be a "collective psychopathy" on the part of its directors and executives. It's time for the Texas Attorney General take steps to control this monster.

    Notes:

    * Drane v. Jefferson Standard Life Ins. Co. 139 Tex 101, 161 S.W.2d 1057, 1058 (1942) an insurable interest:

...is determined by monetary considerations, viewed from the standpoint of the beneficiary. Would he regard himself as better of from the standpoint of money, would he enjoy more substantial economic returns should the insured continue to live; or would he have more, in the form of the proceeds of the policy, whould she die? Therefore it is said that if the situation is such that he might be led to conclude that he would profit by her death, the policy contract is void as to him since the public has a controlling concern that no person have an interest in the early death of another, an interest that may give rise to a temptation to destroy her life.

The Ellen E. Schultz and Theo Francis of the Wall Street Journal state the case a bit more bluntly in the article 'Janitors Insurance' Issue Leaves Workers in the Dark on Coverage (April 24, 2002) when they state:

Until the 1980s, employers weren't allowed to take out policies on workers because they had no "insurable interest" in their survival. In other words, the company couldn't argue that it would suffer financial hardship if janitors, file clerks and nonessential executives perished. Insurable interst rules were designed to prevent life insurance from providing an incentive for murder or negligence, and ultimately discourage one person from "wagering" on the life of another.

I'm sure that I'll become calmer about having lost a Damn Good paying job when it's gone.

Until then I'm sure you all can understand how frustrating it is to work in continuous and sudden Gross Mismanagement aimed to forcefully erode a profitable business into a justifiable target for exportation or reduction in labor overhead through relocation of More jobs without the current workforce. All the while they ridiculously harrass the workforce in order to directly blame the American worker and ourselves specifically for the demise of our own Jobs and Livelyhood in hopes of disgruntlement leading to reduced production and increased overtime, overhead and possible damages. I WILL NEVER make a sub-standard product with direct knowledge of having done so. I throw poorly made and assembled American and mostly Mexican sub-comonents away en mass daily to insure this. BUT we are held captive to watching our jobs slipping away despite any and all effort we exert. The company, a major US auto suplier, even wants us to give up seniority, bid rights, submit to declassification/multi-classification, and other ridiculous demands in order to maintain our jobs, which we've been assured are already gone for a short few years longer. Sadly the infighting and weak local union and the international's bedding with the company assure us too that no calvary will be riding to our salvation. Hopefully you can see why a guy with no clear intentions to BLOW SHIT UP would be angry now.

AND FUCK WAL-MART yeah... it's a nice sentiment isn't it. Sadly, you me and every other dumbass in the country has been too busy saving a penny here and there over the past 10+ years to actually hope to stop them now when there are no longer any alternatives. NOW we're mad that the lil guys are gone, where was the support when they could no longer compete against the mega-giant who sell cheap goods, many times at a LOSS just to drive out the competition of "Mom n Pop's" that were based on good old American Values. The only good that will ever come of our current economic trends is that soon enough there will become a Massive group of people too poor to do anything but learn the traditional ways of self crafting whatever they will hope to have.
