what car did you learn to drive in?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 69f100, Apr 16, 2010.

  1. Practiced my first driving in Dad's old (sorta run down) fishing car, a
1938 Chevy fourdoor. Also about that time, he bought a 1946 or 47
International retired Railway Express truck. It had the "granny" gear,
and I drove it up and down the alley.

Took my driver's test in the family 1957 Plymouth station wagon.

This is a pic of that old Chevy......

That 57 Plymouth wagon (Mom loved it, it was gold & cream) didn't
fare so well. I ran it off a curve into a big ditch one night while racing
with a buddy in his family's 54 Dodge with the red ram V8. The thing
was a total per the insurance company. That was in 1960.

1960? gmc pick up, granny low, up on knees to see over the steering wheel(hand throttle)
keeping it between the hay bales while the older boys were "buckin' bales" I had to slide down off the seat to push in the clutch.
1970 datsun 240Z (the early, fast ones)
And Dads 1966 galaxy convertible, 390GT engine, 4 speed, Blew the engine in the Sacajawia junior high school parking lot, I'm still surprised that Dad didn't kill me that day....

I love those '71 Pete's. Those were the last years for the small narrow windshields and the first years of the wide radiator and grille. It made the truck look like it was chopped from the factory.

'75 VW bus. With a cable operated three foot long gear stick. If you can find the gears on one of them you can drive anything!! Was like trying to stir a box of marbles with a wooden spoon.

Mine was my Dad's '84 GMC Sierra. Straight 6 with almost 300,000 miles on it, 3 on the tree, my dad laughed his ass off at me when I kept stalling it. Thing was loud, bumpy and uncomfortable. Total beater, but it was a tank and I miss the thing. Totaled it when some jackass ran a stop sign and I T-boned him. Funny, that day was the only day I ever wore the seatbelt in that truck.

First started learning in my step-dad's '54 Plymouth. Then the driver's ed car was a '56 Chev. And finally, my dad got me a '48 Chevy when I was 15. So I did a lot of learning in all three of these cars. This was back in the early 1960's. They were all 6-cylinder cars with manual transmissions, and I still prefer a stick shift.

    My Dad's 68 Chysler 300 and my sister's 66 Dodge Dart GT.

  19. My mom started me out on the family 51 chevy. It was her idea. Then I got a 1930 Ford. Bad brakes but I could stop it because I was good at downshifting. Those old Fords had what we called a crash-box tranny which meant it didn't have syncromesh. A lot of people had to double-clutch those trannies. I learned quickly how to match the speed of the car to the rpm's of the engine. I only used the clutch to get underway. You haven't lived until you have driven one of those. :D

  20. I was 13 in '64. Dad had a '56 Ford panel truck, 272 stick shift 3spd. Clutch pedal so damn stiff I could barely depress it, let alone release it without stalling. But dad wouldn't allow me in anything else till I learned to hold that old panel on a grade without stalling it, and without using the brakes. It's a wonder I didn't blow the clutch out.

Later in driver ed we had a '67 Buick LeSabre (whatta tank!) and an Opel Kadette. Teach asked who could drive a stick so I said "Me". I think only one other kid had ever been in a stickshift car so we got to spend most of our 'road time' in the Kadette. Had more fun with it than the LeSabre. I think the teach liked it better too; his driver was a '64 Impala, 4spd.

I learned to drive in a $95 1966 Plymouth Belvedere convertible that I hitchhiked over to buy with my lawn mowing money in defiance of my parents orders. I HAD to learn to drive to get home!! It was a poly BB 318 and a 3spd stick!! But I did it!!

  27. First pickup I drove was Dad's '69 Datsun 1300 pickup, at age 12. Right after that, I bought a '52 Plymouth and drove it home myself, also at 12. But, Dad let me practice a LOT with his '54 Willys CJ-3B 4x4. Had lots of experience before I even got close to getting my license.

  28. '59 Beetle and '64 F-100. I remember sitting in the garage practicing my shifting. ;)
