Flathead to radiator clearance ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by no6, Jan 4, 2010.

  1. I am mocking up my Model A and I have a 51 Merc already mounted, I am in the process of mocking up the radiator and do not have all of the components for the motor. What I do have is a pair of Dennis Carpentor truck waterpumps. My question is how far does the fan stick out past the waterpumps? I do not have the fan, generator or mounts yet. Any pics would also be greatly appreicated. Thanks

You will need a double crank pulley to get the fan mounted far enough forward to clear the Late model flathead distributor location. Do not figure your engine location until you have all the components to mount your fan. It will be tight.

If you are using truck pumps (48-52), you will likely need the truck fan too. The 51 Mercury uses two narrow belts. One drive a pump and the generator and the other drives a pump and the fan. Truck uses a wide belt to drive both pumps and the generator. One short belt forward to drive the fan.

Model A's allways have clearance issues with an 8BA motor and the radiator/front cross member. You might consider a generator mounted fan or conversion to a 59A style set up.

I run an 8BA also. My fan is about 3 1/8 out from the centerline of the passenger side pulley this gives me a little over 1 1/8 clearance with my radiator. Just my opinion, I would get the engine complete ie; fan, pumps, gen, etc before I set anything in stone. Here is a not the best picture for your question, but you can see the stock fan had to be cut down for clearance. [IMG]

You will have more trouble getting a fan to work if you use the 8BA stlye distributor. Use the early style distributor and don't do anything until you have all the components to work with.

  6. The motor and tranny are already in, I did not want to cut the firewall, I hate to say it but I may have to go electric, I moved the crossmember alittle forward but I have some room to play.

no6, here is a post I did on my A with flathead, and late fan. Maybe it'll help you a bit. All I can say is don't go by the Bishop Tardel book - it puts the motor too far forward. I need to move my motor back a good inch to inch and a half, and it'll still be tight.

    Good luck,

Any more shots to add? It looks like th eloper radiator inlets are in line with the water pumps. I'm stuck right now trying to get things straitened out so i can mod the frame. Using a mustang radiator, may have to get it chopped down to get the bottom ports online with the engine.
