The 95 car pictured is the orange and blue car of Hoop Schiable. It is still around in it's condition. Mud and all!

  5. You're 100 % on the money. I bought an old new england late model and discovered the cage was made of driveshafts. After wrecking the car, I cut the cage out and used it in another racecar.:) worked fine. Very low-tech but efficient. On other note, we ran a coupe at bear ridge speedway with electrical conduit for a roll cage. the class had a 2500 lb weight limit, but no track scales. after the races, we'd go downtown to the truck scales and weigh. since the car wouldn't fit on the trailer with the big tires, we had some skinny ones that were water filled. unload at scales and make weight no problem.:D Being young and dumb, it never occured to us how dangerous this cage was. Oh to be that stupid again.

the claim of using "Driveshafts" may sound Bad BUT some of the old car used the outer Torquetube of a closed two piece system,Not the Light weight "Open"tubes we use Now

I know he was racing the coupe in 1984, and maybe in 1985 as well.

In midgets .. When roll bars (not cages) were first mandated I've heard storys guys trying to get away with roll bars being made not only of electric conduit, but also of copper tubing, wrapped in tape .. in an attempt to disguise it.

Love the whitewalls on the Cuputo 111, I don't think that picture is even in " The Shoes" book,a must read for anyone following this thread!

  25. I agree. The Shoe is the best book I've read regarding modified racing. It out does the Evans, Stevens and Wimble books by telling racing stories. I was witness to many of the incidents described in The Shoe, so most of what's said is the real deal. I talked to Kenny many times and have one of his Langhorne qualifier silver bowls. He was a drivers driver.

In Bourcier's book on Flemke (Page 80-82), John Grady talked about how he climbed into Rene's car just before the race, joking around, except he got his "foot caught in the pedals and somebody had to help me get untangled" That's what happened to Rene, and the car also had an electric fuel pump.

    Hello All
I need some technical help. I have recently aquired the remains of this car

I will restore it and put it back on a race track where it belongs, hopefully by the end of the summer, so that my family,s other car (D1) is no longer alone in the coupe class.

My question centers around the exhaust, The AF20 had 4 straight pipes and no collector, does this help or hinder power, and valve longevity, I will be powering it with a 350 chev?

    The Story...

The Albany-Saratoga Speedway fire known as the "French Barbeque".
A John Grady Photograph from the Donn Cote Collection
    [IMG]
Some of the Hall of Fame members that were on hand for the opening ceremonies were asked about their number one racing memory and here is what they had to say:
John Grady – “Unfortunately it was Mr. Rene Charland’s French barbeque at Albany Saratoga. That led to the story of the bravest thing that I have ever seen in my life when Eddie Flemke, who weighed all of 125 pounds at the time, ran into a big ball of fire that was Charland’s car and pulled Rene from the flames. I have never seen anything like it in my whole life. Afterwards Flemke shrugged it off and said well Rene would have done it for me to which
I jokingly replied don’t count on it.”
