almost every car has a price.doesn't it?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by billygoat67, Jan 19, 2010.

  1. Only had one car that had the never sell, my 57 Chevy Sedan Delivery I bought when 16, owned for 16 years and yes, did sell. Had to pay bills. Wife hates it now whenever I see one, I say "Never should have sold it." I don't get that attached anymore, would be too many cars to lament over.

  2. I was debating on putting this story in here but then I read yours and it fit. I too had a 57 delivery and every time this one guy in town would see it he would put a note on it. I gave him the location of two others as I did not want to sell, but the notes kept coming. Well the price was up and the car was needing another rebuild as I drove it as my daily, and I sold it. Well he took it in and started work on it the next week, then started driving it everywhere even a trip from So Cal to New York. He loves that car and I am so glad he has it, as for me I liked it, but it was just one in a line of many. The last I saw it he was putting a new fresh motor in it as he rode the new one he had put in to its death. I am glad he has it.

I knew a guy who went to the Oakland Rod Show one year and saw a really nice hand built 32 ford and asked the owner who was standing there if it was for sale and the guy laughed and said everything is for sale for the right price.

The guy I knew asked him what the right price would be and he thought for a minute and said $102,000 thousand dollars.

The guy took out his check book and asked the owner how to spell his name and with that the guy's face hit the ground when he realized he had just sold his car to a guy with more money then most of us will ever see if we worked two life times.

That old saying be-careful what you wish for his true.

    True story. Jimbo

how many times do i have to tell you guys. it's not for sale. i'm going to restore it. now get off my lawn.

  5. Sold many over the years, but the one I miss most and wish I had not sold is my black '61 Starliner 390/401hp four-speed. I have dreams about that car.
However, I still have my '37 Chevy coupe ( 30 years and counting). Don't plan on selling this one. It would take a financial catastrophe.

I've got a '37 Ford wagon that my father bought in '38. Not for sale.

  18. I think half the guys that say "I'll never sell it" say that because it's an odd ball or kind of a pile and they know no one would ever give them anywhere near the $$ they have wrapped up in it.
The other half believe it, even though it's probably not true.

And if I had Bill Gates type money I'd prove it!

    Kind of like the old joke;
Guy says to a girl "would you sleep with me for a million dollars?"
    she answers yes
Then he says "would you sleep with me for twenty bucks?"
she says "what kind of girl do you think I am"
He answers, "we've already established that, now we're just haggling over price."

I run into cars that are "not for sale" all of the time. If I want it I say something like this....

Sir if someone were to come by and offer you $1 for that car I'm sure you would kick their but right off of your property and with good cause. But I'm also quite certain that if someone offered you a million dollars for it, you would yank their arm off taking the cash so fast. So, all I'm really asking is what is the absolute lowest price it would take for you to actually say yes below that million dollars."

You would be surprised at some of the low prices I've been offered cars for after that! lol

I'm working on two Amphicars now that are "not for sale".

I can't see a number that would take it down the road ,

if by chance one of my kids want to sell if after I'm in the ground ,so be it...

But it make's me feel good to know that ONE thing has gone the long haul with ME!

I KNOW ,I KNOW cry me a fucking river!

I think the "not for sale" argument can be boiled down to two types:

    1. Irreplaceable car: due to rarity of model or one-off, custom built cars with extensvie modifications.

    2. Sentimental value

A buyer that pays "stupid" money for your car because of YOUR sentimental attachment to the car is an idiot and there are fewer of those than you think. i.e. why would someone pay $100K to get your restored 1955 red t-bird just because YOUR father owned the car when he met your mom.

On the other hand, rare, one-off cars can command "stupid" money to the right buyer. Then it's up to you. Even with the money, it would be difficult to buy another 1935 SSJ Duesenberg if you sold yours. I wouldn't sell my '49 Ford coupe easily because of the difficult to get pieces on the car and the amount of fabrication involved, not to mention I did a lot of the work with a great friend. If it was a stock, '49 Ford why wouldn't I sell it for a crazy price because someone had to have the car? My 0.02.

Besides, with the right number of hundred dollar bills hitting the table, most of us are probably not as sentimental as we think. Money talks. A friend of mine is a home builder. He as bought several, "not for sale homes" by showing up with a suitcase of money. Once you put $350K in $100 bills on someone's kitchen table, it usually gets their attention, even if they were not really ready to sell.

So what you are saying is...

If you could, you'd make a real offer on cars that are out of your league, right now.

Kind of like the girl was out of WC Fields league, when he told her that joke...:D :D

only one car i regret was a 36 Ford i got rid of couple years ago...
every car has a price at least to me, i know i am an asshole but hey..

  28. In a weak moment I sold my precious '58 Corvette.
There's a story about it in the section of watching a car you owned die away after you sold it.
My O.T. SS454 is a car I could never put a price on.
    Waaaaaaaaay too much sentimental value.
My '36 coupe would run a close 2nd to that.
Everything else I own has a price though.

Fuck yeah! Bring a shit ton of cash and a bill of sale that says $1.00 and you can have it all! I got dreams and little cash!! I sold my 68 Camaro RS/SS matching numbers, P/S, P/B, factory air car in show room condition right between HS and the Marine Corps in 94....
