    Hey Guys,

I just cant decide what colour to paint my engine. The car is a highboy (lowboy) 34 pickup, chopped 4", channelled 5 inches on a piecut 32 frame, chrome hairpins and suspension bits, chrome reverse rims with wide white firestones, gloss back chassis, gloss black body and bed, with candy red flake firewall and inside bed. Candy red interior with red leather.

The engine is a fuelly headed 327, satin finish 6/71, cragar/isky drive, twin holleys with boat cleaners, script steel rocker covers silver pipes and a hunt mag.

I have narrowed the choices for the engine down to two options. Bad boy black with gold script on the rocker covers, or crazy bright heavy metal gold.

    What do you guys think?

Yeah I do!!!...... They wouldn't hold valve adjustment and hardly no oil pressure.. This motor only had about 10k on it. Avoid those like the plague!!

i occasionally see a '50 ford running aroud here that is hoodless and he has a metal flake gold longblock.

it struck me as odd the first time i saw it but then the more i thought about it i liked it.

I vote for gold or what about the candy red? Also you holding out on us post up some pics. I love a 32-34 truck but I'm partial.

Motor should be painted a color that compliments the color of the car. This isn't a forum for nut and bolt restorations to stock. Paint it a color that will coordinate with the car it's in

I was initially going to go with the same candy flake that is on the firewall. But I figure the candy will turn pink and yuk fairly quick, given I plan on driving this thing. So I started thinking what colour to paint that will contrast, and all the factory colours FAIL pretty bad.

I guess orange might be OK. Still leaning towards a buick style gold.

Just my oppinion but I have always thought any motor should be a color of some type of metal,Silver,Gold,Copper,Bronze etc. For some reason it just seems that the motor of a hot rod should draw its own attention as a statement of muscle and stand out as a powerplant.Colors seem to water down the importance.I do like some cars that are matching colors with their engines but they just seem pretty, not tough.

since you are going 60's style, I would say a candy red engine to match the firewall. second choice is orange but I think that might clash with the firewall.

I vote for crazy heavy metal gold. Gold goes good with candy apple red. Post some pics.

Since you have narrowed it down to two color choices, I vote for the gold .Looks like a hot rod color to me. Black wouldn't "pop" against the black frame.

    Just remember, you did ask.

Gold, silver, orange, yellow? Not even close. None of those are going to get it done.

If the car is detailed out in gloss black and candy red, especially with the red leather interior, then the answer is a no brainer, but something you're going hate if you're looking for a quickie job.

After grinding them smooth, paint the block and heads candy red to match the firewall, then all the tin and steel brackets gloss black to differentiate the motor from the firewall. Highlight the rocker cover scripts by painting them candy red also. Follow up by having the headers and all aluminum bits (intake manifold, blower, blower drive, alternator, etc.) ceramic coated in that black chrome colour. To match the block/heads, I'd also paint the blower field areas between the ribs candy red as well as the body of the Hunt mag. The exception might be to chrome the headers to more closely match the wheels and suspension bits.

    Again, YOU did ask.

I would re-paint the firewall before I would paint the engine anything other than Chevy orange.:D Seriously though , It seems gold would clash with the red and black . Given the two choices you gave us , I say black

That's like saying all HEMIs need to be HEMI orange, V8 Chevrolet engines have been painted every colour under the sun since the first one was pulled out of a wreck and dropped into a hot rod, probably sometime in late 1954.

I realize that .I just like them that way.Read the rest of my post.

  27. How about you have an artsy type person airbrush the side of the block and oil pan in a high RPM mechanical failure scene.
Dripping oil, twisted rod, caps, piston chunks & other wounded internals.
Makes for interesting conversation on say a hood less highboy maybe.

    Chevy orange ... traditional ...

  29. Considering you have a black /red theme with flake and whites you already have a happy mix of coordinated color. Another color will be too much, Chevy orange is great but not here, especially since you have the blower, your attention up front with chrome and the blower is enough and very pleasing. I say tone it down on the block and paint it a flat high heat black. There are a lot of things to consider though i.e. Is the bellhousing polished or painted ? What is on the exhaust? The only other choice would be keeping it on the red flake side or a silver/aluminum look to compliment the blower. It is tough on this side of the screen to give you an exact opinion without seeing the car. But, as a general rule of design it is not good to go beyond a three color sceme. Just my op, good luck sit and ponder before making a choice. :)

markkoch, is that color from a rattle can? Who makes the paint? I like the color alot. Is it high heat?

Also doing a 327, in the same boat with color. Pretty much sticking with a orange/ish color.
