Can I legally run blue dot tail lens in my 49 Chevy? I read in the florida SEMA post that Blue Dot Talil lights were part of the florida law and just wonder if it is part of the Illinois code?
Technically illegal in Illinois, according to the police officers. Whether or not you'll be h***led is a **** shoot though..........maybe.....maybe not. Tim D.
I don't know about the legality as of now. I asked about it in 2004 when I rewired my truck & was told by the IL State police that it was all right, at that time....I have not been stopped or har***ed about them. Yet.
Here is where I call for regs and rules-- 1-618-542-2171 It is the Illinois State Police NON-emergency line. They have always been great about explaining the regulations- bumper height- frame height- trailer lighting- max width- headlight locations- fender coverage- whatever. If they don't have the answer quickly, they have always had the "expert" call me back later after they looked up all the info I need.
Got stopped in '06 for the blue dots installed on my '88 GMC by the previous owner. Got a stern verbal warning. During jury duty early this year, got to listen to a cop ***** about being stopped for the blue dots on his '49 Ford Tim D.
It's supposed to be OK after the "revision of the SEMA laws" shortly before the honorable George Ryan left office. I know a few guys running them. Doesn't appear to be a problem. I'm having a hard time figuring out how it was ever a problem to begin with!
In the last 21 years of owning one of my cars I was told twice to take them out because the were illegal. Once in a late night road block leaving the Cordova Drag Strip and another time I got pullled over and told about a lot of the things illegal on my car.
Ha ha ha ha ah ah ahah ha ah ha ah I think I might have seen you at Sycamore last sunday. Was that you with your dad? Got that chev on the road yet?
Everybody (well, not everybody!) runs them down here with no h***les. The State Nazis are too worried about seat-belts to notice blue-dots!
-We fought for the inclusion of blue dots in the original version of HB4344 here in Illinois. The Illinois State Police said that they would not support the bill if blue dots were not stricken from the originally proposed legislation... But, in July 2005 : "A SAN-supported bill that would allow antique vehicles to display a blue light of up to one-inch diameter as part of the vehicle’s rear stop lamps was signed into law by Illinois Governor Rod R. Blagojevich. The measure recognizes that blue dot taillights have no detrimental impact on safety and enables enthusiasts to modify their vehicles to recall in fine detail the glory days of America’s hot rod era. The new Illinois law follows in the tradition of similar laws enacted recently in Minnesota, Montana, Missouri, Rhode Island and Georgia." quote from SEMA Action Network <http://www.semasan.com/main/main.aspx?id=61605>
Stick Shift yet I was hangin with pop at that show. You should have came up and said hey! Im shooting to have the 57 in the show at the drag strip. Thats less than 2 weeks away!!!
I think it depends on where you live. I friend of mine living up near Crystal Lake got pulled over so many times for his blue dots that he took them out. I live in Chicago and was never pulled over for it. Actually, I was pulled over in Forest Park, but that was because the cop didn't recognize YOM plates. I had to explain the law to him. I didn't bother to remind him that blue dots were illegal. I suppose you could run them, but keep a spare set of non-blue dot lenses in the trunk. It's weird that they're illegal... yet you can buy blue dots in AutoZone, Murrays, etc in IL...
Ha, ha that's funny, you do realize that they can sell just about anything they want, the laws usually just say that we cannot use them?
The problem is the police don't have the most up to date motor vehicle code book. If you have your car inspected by the NSRA, p*** or not, they give you a copy of the inspection sheet which includes the bill number you can refer to if your stopped. Blue dots are O.K. according to the law...the cop may see it different. DD
my dad has been running them on his '33 for about 3 years with no stops. like hellfish said, it depends on where you live. he lives in the far northern burbs of chicago and never has been stopped.
This is one of those things that seems to be decided on an officer by officer basis, without actual regard to what the law says. But really, since blue dots are the clear taillights of yesteryear, why bother?
