Anyone know anything about the '37 Tin-side flatheads? I got a generator/welder trailer thing a while back and this is the engine in it. I know it was the smallest V8 made, but anyone know anything else? Specs? value? I almost got the thing running till the starter gave out. It didnt like cranking with a 12v battery for that long I guess. But it did sputter. lol.
If the block doesn't leak, you're ahead of the game. The general rule is the tin sides are not as valuable as say the larger journal all cast '40 V8-60. If it still has the Stromberg 81, that is worth a penny or two.
Doesnt leak, and does still have the 81. Whats a penny or two? Not trying to sell it, just want to tell the other half my lawn art is valuable. lol.
Are you talking about v8-60? I did a quick search on google of tin side flat head and it brought up all kinds of stuff. Try v8 60 as a search too. lots-o-stuff.
Yep, V8-60, 17-stud is the engine thats in it. Ive always planned on putting it in a 8n or 9n tractor. Figure I wouldnt have to mod the hood sheet metal with a small V8 like this.
The two outer sides of the block water jackets were made of stainless steel sheetmetal, hence the 'tin side' moniker.
I think the tin side was '37 only, but the 60 was built through '40. They were good engines, Ford just put them in cars that were too heavy for the engine. In a lightweight car, they can fly and often did in sprint cars back in the day. Simca (French Ford) used them up until '59.
The last one I bought powered an air compressor. It was on Ebay and I wanted to buy the whole thing. The guy who was selling thought the engine was the only valuable part so he uncoupled the compressor and junked it before I got there to pick it up. I was pissed but like he said............he only had the engine for sale in the ad. Frank
