Sadly ,before dawn broke today we lost 3 Airforce guys in a Helicopter crash, plus one in critical condition, these guys were on there way to Wellington to take part in the ANZAC fly over.

    From our news.......

Anzac Day in New Zealand has been marred by the death of three crew members on an Airforce Iroquois helicopter which crashed on its way to memorial services in Wellington.
Inspector John Spence area commander Kapiti Mana police said this morning the helicopter went down shortly before 6am into hills near Pukerua Bay about 40km north east of Wellington.
''The terrain is very difficult and the conditions with low cloud were difficult,'' Mr Spence said
''The Westpac rescue helicopter managed to get into the scene and winch a paramedic down to the scene.
"Very sadly three members of the Iroquois crew were found to be dead at the scene. One crewman was alive.''
The injured crewman was taken to hospital - Mr Spence understood he had a dislocated knee and chest injuries. Wellington Hospital confirmed to NZPA the crewman was in a serious but stable condition.
Mr Spence said the crash site was very difficult to locate in the low cloud.
Police search and rescue had taken control of the scene and were working closely with Airforce staff to investigate what happened and to identify and remove the bodies of the three crew, he said.
The helicopter ''was pretty badly smashed up'' and looked to be upside down in a ravine.
Mr Spence said he presumed the three crew were killed instantly, the fourth man had managed to get out of the wreck and was found nearby.
The Defence Force this morning has only confirmed the helicopter was travelling from Ohakea and heading towards Anzac Day commemorations in Wellington but would not make further comment.
Pukerua Bay resident Kathy McLauchlan told NZPA she could see the crash site from her window.
Weather conditions at the time of the crash were "extremely misty", she said.
"Since the mist has lifted we can see it."
The crash happened quite high on the hills overlooking Pukerua Bay, Ms McLauchlan said.

  3. Lest we Forget, Thanks for the pic's Rat Bastard. Thanks to those diggers past and present.

  4. Thanks Doc, I went to 2 services today - the Dawn service & then the 11 O'clocker with the kids, it's important that they grow up with rememberace bred into them.

As an import to this Country I enjoy the Anzac day proceedings more so than the Rememberance Day from back home.

    Lest we forget

Yep, finished work at 5:30am and went to the 6:30 dawn service, well worth it, great to see so many younger ones coming along to the service.

  10. A sad start indeed Steve.
Especially so as the 4th member lost his battle late today also.

May we forever be thankful for those brave souls way back then.
Things may have been different for those of us here today..

A fourth person has died after this morning's Air Force Iroquois crash near Wellington.
Three crew members died instantly when the chopper ploughed into a steep hillside in mist, near Pukerua Bay around six o'clock.
Defence Minister Wayne Mapp is at the Anzac commemorations in Auckland and he has confirmed the fourth crew member died in hospital.
He is describing the accident as a brutal blow.
Inspector John Spence says the Iroquois had flown from Ohakea. He says the recovery operation is proving difficult, as the chopper went down in a ravine on a very steep hillside.

The death of the forth was misleading, he has had surgery, still critical, but alive

Served with NZ and Aussie troops in Viet Nam, had great respect for them then and now.

  23. I guess I better thank everyone who posted here, I and my fellow Australians appreciate the acknowledgment you have given us.

I am damn proud to be an Australian and even prouder still to have served my country for many years in our Army. I take my hat off and shed a tear today for my mates that did not come home, even operations in Peace Keeping incurs casualties as did we fighting alongside the US and British forces in the Middle East.

To they still operational, keep your head down and stay safe behind the wire.

Good on ya Doc, Took the wife (U.K) and kids 3+5 along to the later service near home yesterday, was good for them all, Mrs' first time helps her become a Kiwi to understand where we come from and good for the little ones to see and hear too, then went a couple of suburbs across to pop a poppy on my Grandads grave, Galipoli vet came home with a buggered arm they wanted to lop off but he wouldn't let them, farmer with one arm wasn't much chop I guess still he did o.k. and lived till 80.
Had to stop myself doing a letter to the editor of the national paper where some idiot was making the most of the freedoms he enjoys to say how ANZAC day reeks of colonialism and is very much European NZ focused.... I guess he never went to a ceremony and saw and heard how inclusive it was......

55olds88 ... Sounds like that letter writer knows he has it good, just not clear on why ... I have a few highly tanned kin in Hawera that would love to explain things to him...

Glad to see ya shared with the kids ... Teach them something they won't learn in school ...

In times of battle or even civil disaster, it does not matter where you are from or what color you are ... If a job needs doing then ya git-er-done ...

A page from my Grandfather's war diary. He served at Gallipolli and in France, survived and returned to Australia. He was killed in a railway shunting accident in 1930, when my father was 2 months old.

His diary contains heaps of names and addresses of people he met, snippets of songs and poems, virtually nothing about the fighting.

The couple of sentences in the bottom left about his first day on the front
were enough for him. me too!
