Has anyone gone through a VIN verification in california?. I'm titling my car as a specially constructed vehicle and I'm hoping that CHP isn't going to make me have fenders, windshield wipers, bumpers ect. Any advise would help. I might trailer it to them to avoid any problems. Any suggestions?
You are better off trying to find a vin verifier that works with the dmv. I have a buddy that is a vin verifier with the dmv and he charges me a 150 bucks and does all the paper work and doesnt care if it doesnt have fenders or windshield wipers.
It does NOT have to be completed, or a driving vehicle to have the VIN verified. If you are a member of AAA, you might consider taking it to them for verification. Just call them to set up an appointment for it, as not everyone there is qualified to do a verification. You can get a one day "pass" for it and drive it to them, or if you have access to a trailer that would certainly work, as well. If you are a member, it is free.
Actually, the DMV stopped that awhile back. You now need someone that is licensed with the DMV to perform the verification. A regular cop's signature at the bottom of the paperwork COULD be refused by the DMV. I'm certain that some slip through, but the DMV looks pretty close at it now.
i took my bike to get signed off at the chp a while ago was no problem was sweatin it because its a loud striped down bike i rode down at 5.30 am and chp checked the numbers and thats it.was real easy all bikes have to go to chp for years was riding with incomplete paperwork didnt want to take it to chp but bit the bullet got lucky.i take all my cars to a vin verifier they do all the leg work and you wont have to take it to chp.and you get your paperwork the next day
I know you better be on time and all your ducks in a row or the CHP will tell you to come back. I had a dmv agent verify my vin, but thats how i roll. If i was you go with a vin verifyer and have a good registration place take it in. My lady holds my stuff till someone nice and in a good mood is working at the DMV. Can take a little time tho.
I just took a "specialty construction", Brookville bodied, 32 roadster to my local CHP office to have a VIN assigned. I trailered the car since it's not finished, no fenders, no windshield,no wipers, no bumpers, no seatbelts, no paint, dirt track (non DOT) tires. They assigned the VIN without any problems. The officer who attached the VIN tags did inform me that I would need to put fenders on it.
I had trouble getting the DMV to buy local police or CHP sign offs. I made an appointment and trailered the car to the DMV office and a woman there came out and looked at it. Everything went very smooth. Not sure that still works but it did 8 years ago.
I just brought a 56 Chevy pickup project in from Nevada. It was origianlly a CA truck and I had a stack of CA registration slips in the glove box. VIN tag had not been tampered with and all the paperwork was clean. Took the truck (on a trailer, no engine/trans yet) to the El Cajon DMV and the guy wouldn't even look at it because it didn't have an engine. I asked him what did the engine have to do with the VIN...he shrugged and said that the vehicle must be "complete" before he could verify the VIN. More DMV BS!
i had THE AAA office do a vin verify for me. its been quite a few years ago ,so i dont know if they still do.
I had my VIN verified when the car was basically just a bare frame with axles attached, no body mounted or engine installed. I called the CHP and had a Officer come by my shop. No problem, the car does not have to be complete to get a VIN verification, You are not having the vehicle inspected just the VIN verified. I did this last year so it wasn't that long ago either.
I guess I'm lucky- I have a good friend who (up until today, he retires at 4:30 PM after 30 years) is a CHP officer. I had the frame rails on the ground, the engine and trans in one corner of the garage, the body leaned up on it's firewall and chained to the garage wall, rear end in another corner, and boxes of parts like front axle, hairpins, wheels and tires, etc etc He took a look at all the parts, shook his head at me, asked me where on the frame I wanted the VIN tag, and what I wanted to register it as... I said "right over the steering box on the driver's side frame rail" and "as a 1926 Ford Tudor Sedan, please" and that's exactly what I got. He gave me a sheet of paper from the Vehicle Code that specified what I had to have in the way of bumpers, lights, window glass, horn, etc etc, that I followed and he came back after the parts were all assembled and stuck the other VIN tag on the A pillar of the body.
I'm in the middle of sorting out some of this stuff as it applies to our special constructed vehicle bill AB-1740. Could you guys that have these VIN tags tell me what they look like and where they came from. I think things vary quite a bit here , and you'll get a different story depending on who you're dealing with. Are they stick on or riveted?
it depends on where you are, i had a just regular police officer try and do mine twice and got nowhere and dmv would not accept it, i went to officer petretti in placerville, did it in about 30 mintutes and there was no hassle. i just got a one day driving permit and drove it to him. But anyways, he likes old roadsters and whatnot and i highly doubt he would make you run fenders.
Speed - I have seen both. Actually I bought a trailer once that sat for 20 years and the stick-on "Blue Tag" as we called them was lying on the ground next to it. There was no stamped in frame number. I saw riveted on tags on bike frames with the assigned VIN stamped into the frame right next to the tag that also had that number on it. There are probably many revisions of the Blue Tag. I do not know what is current.

i just bought a 1953 chevy 3100 and the local chp office was nice enuff to do the vin cert at my house. it will be blue taged and they riveit here in colfax ca. i have never done this before being from Mississippi and all. but it seems easier to do it blue taged dont know it i willl have to smog. hop to god not. but i have just a frame cab fenders hood and axles with body tag in door jam. and he said no prob. golden run chp office i think is the name of the office its near colfax ca.
Had a friend of a friend CHP sign off on my vin verification last year in august, no problems at all. I'd say if you're worried about the guy showing up and throwing the book at you, find one who's into the hobby... ask around I think you'd be damned suprised how easy it is to find a cop thats a friend of a friend
