My father who does not own a computer and never will has a 1950 Lincoln 337ci (we think?) eng and automatic trans and wants to know about getting a 4 speed for it. Will certain Ford or Mercury units bolt up? I did some searching with no luck, Any advice or links on what trans would work or any interesting info would be great. Thanks
The automatic in a '50 Lincoln is a GM sourced Hydromatic, and they had a special bellhousing to mate it up to the motor. The bellhousing is not the same pattern as the Ford or Mercury flatheads. But, Ford did use the big 337 flathead in big Ford trucks, think 2 1/2 ton grain trucks like you might use on a farm. I think your best bet to find a stick bellhousing and flywheel would be to track that stuff down out of a big Ford truck, I doubt any of them had automatics. That stuff is probably bulky, but you gotta work with what's out there. I would also guess that a 3 speed stick was available in '50 for Lincoln, but I've never seen any so I'm guessing they were fairly rare. I could be wrong. A bellhousing and flywheel out of a stick Lincoln would work the best I would think.
I've got a '49 Cosmo Convertible with a 337 Flathead and factory 3 speed with OD (same trans as the Merc) you should be able to find all the related parts needed to do the swap. Check the Road Race Lincoln Register Car Club, I think the web site is RRLR.com.
I put the big FH motor in a 32 Ford 3 window chassis a few years ago and it had a stick shift bellhousing with a 3 speed OD. Have no idea what it came out of. Customer supplied the parts.
