I'm going to make a comparison to movies, there are many to be inspired by while filming one, some flop in the movie theaters, some even don't do well until the next generation comes along and enjoys that movie, some of the best movie`s are super low bugget..Art is art and inspiration is inspiration, peoples opinions are just that peoples opinions. What ****s is when your stoked on letting that artistic view to be open to public opinion and you get slammed, ones artistic view is personal-period.Van Gogh was considered a joke till after he was dead...then people liked his work..People cant stand things/ideas that are new-In music everything used to be in 4/4 time(were talk`n few hundred years ago) when 3/4 time first came into play it was considered not music at all now we have all styles of music with every possible time signature-just let people do there thing there own style/idea and appreciate it for just that-hey man thet was that guys vision and respect that and there will always be new ideas and new styles brewing in the future....That being said encourage your kids to think for themselves and to be not afraid to create from there own mind and not google for ideas

Or.... Is it the same or more innovation but it takes more and more (because of m*** exposure) to impress us? Because we are a transient society, disposable society.

How long did you spend at the last show REALLY examining cars? Just walk past trying to CONSUME as much as you could? All the while feeling like you have to see ALL the show, ALL the vendors, ALL the swap meet and not miss anything.... and I ended up missing EVERYTHING that mattered.

Build what YOU want. Most car nut mags feature cars built on a million dollar budget, cause that is what sells mags. Most of those feature cars are about as interesting as the 6 o'clock news. I have not gone to a car show in over 10 years, not worth it as all those cars are the same. I always see the best ones being driven on the street. JMO

I agree with the above sentiment and many of the others posted on this thread. As someone who's spent a lifetime around hot rods, sports cars and other motor vehicles, I find some of the comments made by other HAMBers rather surprising. On one hand people get flamed for not having a HAMB friendly ride and then others talk about using late-model pick up frames (S10 for example) and engines for their traditional machinery.

In my experience, hot rodding and kustom building was always a place for innovation and creativity and I have seen some amazing work done in all genres of the hobby/sport.

Some of the negative at***udes that appear on threads on this site are nothing new - go back nearly FOUR DECADES and there was some real vitriol about allowing post-1948 vehicles into the NSRA. I was in the middle of it (as a proponent of what became the Street Machine/Van Division) and remember owners of early iron refusing to go to events that allowed late model vehicles to participate.

Let's enjoy what one another are doing with their pride-n-joys. Frankly, I'm blown away by most of what I see others are doing, whether it's my taste or not.

Nothing can grow out of nothing. Everything you create is influenced by everything you have ever seen, learned or lived through. To have access to see millions of vehicles (or other things) and to learn about them can help in finding your own fields of interest. It doesn't necessarily kill creativity, but can increase variety of different things there are, because the foundation of your creativity is larger, you're not bound to the opinions of your friends, to the magazines available, or to the things you see around you anymore.

The need to create something new can supposedly rise from an individual's own ideals and ideas, but still I think almost everyone would like to find some approval to their creations. For most of us, finding at least one other person who can see the brilliance we think our creation possesses, somehow fulfills it or proves it's not just ********. If your purpose when sharing your ideas on the Net is not to create and show off something that pleases as many people as possiple, but to find, of the billions of people, the few ones who could possibly understand your art, it's not killing creativeness. you just need to learn to ignore the non-constructive critique you get and to find joy in finding someone who gets your thing.

Surely there is a threat for individuality and creativeness in social forums like this, but it can be avoided by being aware and by thinking yourself. Don't try to please everyone. And don't post a reply to a thread just to tell you don't understand why someone is doing his thing and you think it's stupid.

I think there is still rooom for innovation or creativity if you prefer. You can be creative and still stay well within the bounds of "Tradition" its just more work than following the lead goat.

We all seem to forget that there was common things done to cars back in the day then there were things that were done but the creative bunch that were uncommon but never the less done in good taste.

For whatever reason we tend to lean towards the common with a very few exceptions.

Personally being a rule breaker I would prefer to be the lead goat as opposed to just another one of the sheep. So some of the things that I am inclined to do will make the sheep majority scratch their heads.

Dig in and find something that you are sure that someone must have done call it trad and make the nay sayers prove you are wrong.

Do you think in this day and age based on the above, that the creation of something new is now lost ?
With everyone ( many people ) so worried about how they will appear ,,does this negatively impact innovation and creativty ?

    I agree completely.

You all can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that innovation is an important part of the tradition of hot rodding. My opinion is that if you come up with something new, even if it isn't what would have been done 50 years ago, you are continuing the very essence of what the hobby was in its formative years. Sure, the ideas, parts, look and outcome might be different, but the important part, the guiding principle, is the same.

I think an innovative car that looks nothing like what was or even could have been done 50 years ago is more in line with the true tradition of hot rodding than a perfect replica of car from the time.

We have so much more available now than we had back when. This is a great plus to building our p***ion. Our toys can not only look great, but be alot safer to enjoy. Building your ride the way you want it is the main thing. If you dont, you are building it for someone else without realizing it. My 2c's

Building a Hot Rod is thinking out of the box. What would have happened if back in the day no one ever looked at a Model A for example and said " You know what I bet that thing will look alot better with a little off the top" That was being different. If you think inside the box you will never see change.
