I think all she has to do is go to dmv and fill out the proper forms (They will tell her) apply for ***le. then she'll have to go to a specific police station( the dmv will supply the info) and they will put a new vin # tag on the vehicle. I think there is a waiting period ????Thats what a friend did some years ago .I don't know about now with all the new laws

tell her to go to a dmv service in the worst part of town...or go to the dmv in compton..thats where I get all my stuff done..no muss no fuss..they wont let the man keep her down [IMG]

  4. If they put a VIN on the car, its "blue tagged" and not worth a ****.
She needs to go to the DMV, or better yet the AAA if she is a member.
They will ask her where she bought the car, just need a name, address, and price. Doesnt need to be real. They will require a VIN verification, which entails TOWING the car there, on a trailer, and they need to see 2 matching #'s on the car.
Dont drive the car there or youre screwed for any fees owed for when your loose lips say it was put on the road.
They verify the numbers and youre done. Probably will cost $100 or less, unless theres been any inquiries about it or parking tickets in the last 10 years... If so, you owe all the back fees. But it dont cost to ask. Have her take the VIN in and have them run it, if its off record youre good.
The golden rule at the DMV is keep your mouth shut, answer the questions with yes and no, do not volunteer any other information.

  5. if it was in her name before then, i think all she needs to do is a "lost ***le" paper. then either register it or non op it.

How long does it take for an unregistered car and plates to go "off the computer"? or how many years would it take for the DMV to not have any record of the car?

if it belongs to her. i would suggest to put it under a different name. cause they will proablly make her pay back fees. once the paper work is all done and legit. transfer the ***le back to her name.

i have just gone in filed for loss of ***le. showed a bill of sale and out the door i went.

there has been times that i needed some signatures. i just went to grab some lunch. forged the signature and went right back and stood in line. i didn't have time to go back another day.

Caddydave, after 4 yrs its off the record. unless somebody inquired about it. then it starts all over again.

i thought it was 5 years........ after that they might want to see it and verify the vin, but then again each dmv is different. isn't that sad, same laws + different dmv offices = different answers. [IMG]

It really is easy...up here in noth cali. I go to dmv website and download the VIN verification form and call the police station...they actually send an officer over to fill out the form (nice livin in a small town) but if I have the car at my shop in the next town over I call anybody with a badge that I know...or even not ..it really doesn't matter..they just have to fill out the for CORRECTLY very important...dmv doesn't like any corrections on the vin verification form.
Then go to dmv and apply for a lost ***le. The car won't be in the computer so they cannot charge any "late fees" just a small fee for new paperwork. They will want a statement of what happened to the ***le and where the car was stored all these years.
I just did this a couple of weeks ago...usually do one per year when I get a car without a ***le....uh,that I have "stored" for a long time [IMG]

I have all my cars done this way: I call CHP (California Highway Patrol)tell them I need the vin certified. They come to the house, fill out the paper work, sign it and off to the DMV you go. You will also need a bill of sale. I have my dad sign a "bill of sale" saying he's giving me the car as a gift---saves bundles on transfer fees. Then I tell the chick at the DMV, I havent driven the car more then 10 foot since Ive had it, If you tell her it runs then its like a $150 fine for not registering it!! You pay your fees--mine always seem to be about $58, she gives you your registration, plates and tags. Then in 6 weeks you get the ***le. For the first year you dont have to have insurance to register it, but if she gets pulled over they will impound the car and fine her. Always works for me, and like I said Ive done it with every car I own.

What kind of smiling do you do to get the CHP to actually come out to your house?
Is this some new personalized service or does it only work for pretty girls? [IMG] [IMG]

No seriously, if you tell them that you need a VIN verified and say that the car doesnt run, they will schedule you an appointment and come to the car! Oh thanks for the compliments [IMG]
