As I take on my newest task of ripping out the straight 6 and all stock suspinsion for a 350 a rack and pinion I hear the biggest debate on which front suspinsion to buy? As I have said before I'm not a expert by any means on mecahnical work so I am once again at the mercy of my HAMB buddies. I've heard FatMan Ultra Low is the way to go, I've hear Myer Suspinsion is the way to go....... Can I get some help guys???? I have a 2K budget for my front end if that helps any? All the help is greatly appreciated! Sam
Nothing wrong with the front end you have. Upgrade it with disc brakes or 54 Chevy drums. Rebuild it with new parts and it will drive nice. If you want to lower it, use dropped spindles and cut 1/2 coil. My 38 Chevy has a 54 front end with rack & pinion steering and sits nice with just the coil cut and did I mention the ride was great.
1. nothing wrong with the stock front end. just polish that old turd. 2. no need for disc brakes because I locked 'em up once. 3. Mustangs and Pintos were ****ty little cars so the aftermarket front ends based on these cars are **** too. 4. Jag front ends almost fall into place and are cheap and plentiful at the junk yard. 5. 40 year old Camaro clips are the best because you can get them cheap and then have your tires rub. 6. put a rack and pinion off some car with mixed results. 7. FATMAN ultra low. 8. some other vendors MII. these are the chioces debated over and over here until a person gets a headache. I recommend the FATMAN ultra low. no welder?? Ch***is Engineering makes a bolt in MII. I have never heard anything bad about this front end.
RatFink Is right on! all these are good points I will add however that Art morrison makes super nice stuff that is based on mustang II in a sense the only thing on their suspension that is MII is the spindles so you have endless brake options from cheap to really expensive. The rest of their front is their own design and geometry with no bumpsteer! I have one mocked up at my house not welded in yet but mocked up all the way up to all the way down the wheels camber, caster and toe dont move enough that i can measure. I've seen more than one fatman on a car laid on the ground with the wheels kicked in at the top cuz the camber goes funky as it drops down. Just My 2 cents Dave Hitch
I have Fatman in my Terraplane and Jim Meyer in my Chevy. The Meyer is better since he uses Chevelle components and it is height adjustable. It also bolts in with the existing holes. The meyer setup is outside your budget. You would probably be better off rebuilding your stock suspension and maybe add a disk brake kit for now.
