A couple weeks ago when a friend of mine offered me this '60 Buick Invicta convertible project, I had to buy it, the lines on these cars are so bitchen' ... I think it needs to be a mild custom! Looking for ideas on how to make a cool low-budget mild custom out of it. I did up a Photoshop of what I'm thinking, but open to all kinds of ideas and styles. See more "as is" pics here http://www.60impala.com/private/MyBuick/ The custom concept is basically shaved and slammed, with Skylark wire's on 1" whitewalls, with lake pipes and a Gene Winfield inspired fade.
Im not diggin the side pipes. Adds to much to the thickness of that flat side IMO. What about some bellflowers to add some length to the back and give it that tail draggin look. I have no clue how to use photoshop or id try it out. You did good getting that car tho, Endless possibilities for sure.
Wow! Congrats on a nice catch! I dig Your paint concept, except that particular execution would benefit from a little less "white", in hopes of maybe highlighting the intricate shapes of the sides some more. I´d retain the side trim myself, lightens up the side-view and again helps keep the "boxy" -impression at bay. Lose the sidepipes (of any kind), too. Clutter. For an alternate idea on rolling stock, I´d think that car would also look pretty damn dynamite with a set of Supreme spokes to go with the style of tires You already picked out, OR, Chr.Reverses with a yet broader whitewall. But then doesn´t everything of that vintage, LOL. You said You were open to ideas and styles..., anyway that´s my 74c. Best of luck, get to it. Get busy. Summer is nearing as we speak...
My 2 cents: I've never been a big fan of pipes. I would keep the port hole chrome, too, its kind of iconic for buicks. the color and wheels are sharp.
Thanks guys, all good suggestions. I dig wide whites and chrome reverse wheels for sure, and that very well may be what it gets, if not simply because the cost of repro Skylark wires is astronomical! As for keeping the side trim, I hear ya about breaking up the tall sides. Sidepipes.... undecided on that. Bellflowers are cool too, and might help it look lower in the back. Keep the ports? Might have to do up a new Photoshop to try some of these ideas. Thanks! Keep'm coming!
I like where you're headed, but am also not a fan of sidepipes on this car. I was going to replace the fake portholes on my car with real ones from a different year Buick, but I eventually figured that the lines are much cleaner without them. Besides, now all the 'tricked out' Hondas run around with stick-on portholes from Pep Boys. Bleh. I say leave them off. Here's mine. I've used a lot of the same ideas you're talking about. I'd like to do Cinnamon color fades similar to your photoshop, but haven't gotten to it yet. They're good cars and you don't see many of them around. You have a great project on your hands. If this is your first Buick, ya might wanna keep some $ back for a trans swap though (which also means getting rid of the torque tube). The Dynaflows are leaky pigs. There's info here on the HAMB if you do some searching. IMO, this is the only bad point of this era Buick. Good luck with your build!
Nappy, thanks for the info.... cool looking ride. I was linked to your thread on Losboulevardos.com yesterday. I dig the use of the fender lip and rocker mouldings.
OK, here's a revised Photoshop treatment. Lost the lakes pipes, put the port holes and side trim back on. I must say, I do like this better! I tried it with some Bellflower pipes, but it wasn't working for me.
Yowza! That would be an incredibly sexy damn car! Put pencils, but keep them short straight out the back, so you don't really see them. Incredible drop top....................and so incredibly rare.
Dave, Where can I see your concepts, the first link does not open up. Is it still up anywhere? I have a mild custom 60 Invica. You can see it on my profile. I would love to see your concept/concepts
Hi sidewinderstu.... I moved my websites to a new server and never did re-post those photos... but, here's a fresh one. You can see many more pics, as the car now has its own restoration blog at www.60buick.com. BTW, I've seen other pics of your car in addition to those in your gallery... way cool!
Hey Dave as I look through the pics I'm wondering what the side would look like with the entire lower beltline vertical line removed and smoothed. I think the smooth sides would cleanup the car a bit and direct the eye more to the sculpted curves and wings. That straight vertical line just looks "in the way" (?) somehow of the curves of the rest of the car. Possible to photo shop that out for a look? Stu, Great '60! Jus' goes to show how little one needs to change from the original lines and trim to make these cars look incredible. Beautiful work! The Invicta Custom interior is a nice touch, musta been hard to round up that stuff for the build. Is your car painted in the original Pearl Fawn color? Looks close to the original color of mine. Steve, actually thats how I first photo-shopped it, but with some advice at the beginning of this thread I put the trim back on and actually like it better that way. You are right, these cars are very cool just they way Buick made them. Basically, lay it on the ground and your pretty much done! As for the "Invicta Custom" interior... that rocks, those buckets are impossible to find and big bux! Stu, was your car originally a "Custom" model?
I've seen your car at Goodguys and it blows me away. It was the first one I thought of when I started reading this thread. It's so clean and I love that interior. Details, details please.
