so, say a fella got an old stationary motor tank, 'bout 10 gallon sized, but really cool lookin. i've heard they make a pour in type tank conditioner that prevents any leftover scale or rust from makin its way into the fuel lines.... anybody got experience with somethin like that? inside of the tanks actually pretty clean, i'm just thinkin maybe as a 2nd line of defense on a tank this old some kinda sealer couldnt hurt.. thoughts? ideas? ridicule?
If the tank looks clean I wouldn't worry about it. They do make fuel tank liner, I'm sure you could find it at your local parts store. I haven't used it personally, but I have heard it's easy to do and effective.
I've used 3M stuff and it works OK. After you wash out the tank and let it dry, you pour in the quart can and slowly roll the tank around to completely coat the inside. After it is coated you stand the tank up and drain out the excess then let it dry overnight. Be sure and take the sending unit out so it doesn't get damaged. One tip I learned a long time ago was a way to get the old dirt and rust out. Place a short length of chain in the tank along with warm water and some laundry soap. Shake it around and let the chain knock the rust loose. Rinse it out a few times then use the sealer.
Here's mine, which I bought from another HAMBER a couple of years ago. I had the inside cleaned by a local radiator/tank place & sealed with some stuff called Redcote. He had to drill two holes in it (to clean it) because it had anti-slosh baffles in it. It's from a 1924 Federal-Knight truck. There are threads on this here, so a search would be in order. So far, everything has been O.K., i.e. no big dirt in the gas filters (one were the gas comes out of the tank & one before the carb). To be sure, I did fill the tank & then drain it & changed the filters.
