Does anyone know if someone makes a modern reverberator or receiver head unit, similar to the old Vibrasonic spring units sound wise, that I can hide in the car, but still have that old reverb echo sound?
I had a vibrasonic some 25 years back. Play hell on your music when you were going over bumps. Good luck with your search.
JC WHITNEY had one in theit catalog about 20 years ago.It also had a power boost built in it with seperator.Only like 6 inches long and about 1in thick. I have one but the car is in storage(not close)I dont know who made them. They sound real good.
Had a friend in a band yrs. ago & he showed me one he made. Real simple in a little wood cigar box size case. Had two tape heads, one fixed position to record onto the tape & the other head was on a slide & moveable, just a inch or so from the 1st. It was a playback head so when the distance between them was increased, so did the amount of reverb. Had a circular tape maybe 12" to 18" cir***ference & some kinda motor made it move & go around the tape heads. Wish now I'd of paid more attention, this guy was sharp & homebuilt a lot of musical trick stuff like this with no education. Doug
Dad had a Sony reel to reel tape deck in the 60s that had SOS (sound on sound) echo recording ability sort of like that. I'll get my brother to work on designing a modern digital reverb...don't hold your breath....
. Vibrasonics will not work on a two channel stereo. I have a factory one out of a 1963 olds station wagon.I started to install it in a 64 impala,it sounded great! but, because its made for mono AM only and the only thing i could get on AM was baseball games and rush linball.Stereo took its place.
I've been told that some of the newer power amp's have a reverberator feature on them, is anyone aware of this?
if I were in your shoes, I'd ****** up an ****og spring reverb unit used on guitar amplifiers, like the danelectro spring king. Ten years ago, they were like 300 bucks? Must be cheaper now, or maybe not, who knows. Nothing beats a reverb tube on a dual showman piggyback though, shame I am far too broke to ever get one myself.
I still have mine from back in the day along with my record player however the reverb is not in the car currently. I need to dig it out.
Well... I got what you guys are look'n for!! I make reverbs for modern sound systems. I also make color bars too! check'm out...
Wow,,,,I haven't heard that term in maybe 40 years. Vicky & I had a 1956 Forc CV with a reverb in it back in 62. LOL,,,nice sound it was.
Guys that have reverbs For Sale should post 'em in the For Sale section here. Post services avaialble too. Anyone know when reverbs first started being used in cars? perfect touch for a 60's car.
Vibrasonics can be rewired to work with stereo sound(2 channel). Its not that hard to do. A trip to radio shack will get you everything you need to do the job. Here's mine. With my 69' Muntz, all chrome 8 track.
I had an aftermarket reverb in a '64 Tempest wagon. If you drove with the radio off and the reverb left on, it would sometimes produce an "acoustic crash" when you went over a bump. A friend drove my car and experienced this one time, and it scared the **** out of him! He said he thought the back half of the car fell off.
We used to make our own "pseudo reverberators" by buying a roll of wire of the same gauge as the speaker wires. Leave one set of speakers on either side stock then split the roll of wire into two sections at least 20 feet long and run the extra long wire to the other set of speakers. The added long length of wire had just enough extra resistance that the sound was just out of phase with the other side and that provided the reverberator effect BUT you were stuck with it on all the time.
I still have the unit I had back in the mid 60s. It had a small push-pull/rheostat switch that mounted under the dash but the actual unit could be placed anywhere. (Mine was in the trunk.) Pull for 'On', then dial in the amount of delay you desired. It's on a shelf in the garage now. I was thinking about putting it back in the '57 if I ever get it back on the road. I'll dig it out tomorrow and see if there's any info on the manufacturer. The town I live in has RR tracks everywhere so you can imagine what I dealt with. The thing drove you NUTZ!
