The rule is that you can't have a checkered fire wall unless you have red wheels.

    (Nice intro)

    Welcome to the hamb.
Checekrboard is usually done with masking tape and paint. Sort of cheating to use stick-ons

  4. There is NO easy program. It's very labor intensive! Many many thanks to Danny. After first color you lay out the lines and tape it ALL off. Then razor blade cut each box. Then re top coat to seal any cute to bare metal. Then second color and pull tape hoping no paint comes with the tape. All this is done in a time frame of paint cure or you half to sand each painted block. I did the lay out with a rivet fan for sheet metal work. Same number of blocks just wider at the top than the bottom. Each job is different pending personal preferance. Lot's of Luck.

I know this is an old post, but I think I could save you guys some time doing your checkerboards. In my day job(surfboards) this is how we do our checkers. First paint the whole area white that you want to checker. Then use the width tape that you want the checkers to be. So ours tend to be 1" or 2" checkers. We lay stripes with the tape going in one direction, butting the tape next to each other so the whole area is covered in strips of tape. Then we pull up every other piece of tape and lay tape going horizontal over top of the other tape and pull up every other one. At this point you have 1/2 of the checkers you want and shoot the paint on these areas. After drying, pull the tape and now you will tape in one direction directly over the painted checkers. Then tape the other direction directly over the painted checkers again. Now paint the open areas and when you pull the tape you will have all of your checkers and no razor cuts. Hope that helps!

As stated, labor intensive. No way to get around it. Careful of any curves in your firewall and remember to add length to the squares in the curve. All i did was start drawing lines to see what i needed to do. I had to sand it off anyway so it was OK. I faded the bottom out with the undercoating to give it a better appeal. Looked real funny just comin to a dead stop. Hope that helps.

    Cool tip on the board...

  12. Go to the dreaded ''stick on'' shop and have them cut it out of masking vinyl. Apply masking, spray, remove vinyl.
Doing it the old way is a pain, but traditionally anal.

I always hated checkerboard, because it drew the eye and held it forever and that's all you could see. It cannot be ignored.

  13. Coastairbrush.com sells a transfer tape called transfer rite Its like 30 bucks a roll and u could probably cover ur whole car with one roll. Its made to be pretty urethane proof. After u lay it out U draw the design right on it and lightly cut it with a fresh razor blade. Changing them after a little bit. Must stay sharp or ull dig right into the paint. (Id practice this a little bit before u try it to get the feel because if u dig into the paint u can have paint creaping under.) Come to think about it, dont try this on yer first thing. :)
