Bought a mid 50's Studebaker 259/289. I'll run the #s to see what it is. Heard it run on a stand Thurs. and bought it Fri. Gonna have too many carbs and a t5 behind it. It'll get patked in front of the firewall of my '27 T Sedan. Pretty geeked about this one. Gonna be cool.
What kind of multi-carb intakes are available? See, I'm a skinny little dude and I think a hi-carb diet would benefit me greatly.
i am not sure if multi-carb intakes were made for the stude 259/289 . i have never seen one in any case . i have heard that you can use early cad intakes with alittle modification . i am sure there are people on here that can confirm this and know what mods are nessesary .
I'm not sure. Any markings were ground off when it was polished. It was made for 4 bolt carbs. This one has the 4 to 3 bolt adapters to use the Stromberg 97s. Someone said it was a Weiand but I'm not certain about that. I've got 2 Studebaker 4 bolt Stromberg WW's for it but they are rear draft and take special aircleaners and the linkage is on the wrong side. That's on the back burner for a while 'cause the 97s work just fine for now. Someone is making a dual carb intake that will take the 53 carbs and air cleaners but it's not cheap. I saw it at the Stude show that they have at York every year. One of the old dual carb intakes for a Stude was made to mount the carbs 90* from their normal orientation and used bellcranks to connect the linkage for the sideways pull. You can learn a lot on the Studebaker Drivers club site. Check it out.
There was also a 224 2 bbl. V-8 used in early '55 Commanders and '55-'56 trucks. My Commander came with one originally but sometime in the past it got replaced with a '56 289-4V out of a President or Sky Hawk. I picked up an Edmunds Twin 2 bbl. intake for mine but am still one carb short. There were several multi carb intakes made for the Studes, none were really "great" performance wise but look cool. While it's true the Cad intakes will bolt up the port mismatch is pretty considerable, the Stude manifolds are out there and are priced about the same as the Cad intakes.
I see that you are from Mich. There is a Studebaker Event this coming weekend MAY 7 & 8 at the 4H Fairgrounds in South Bend, Indiana. The Swap meet may have some goodies for your build. Studebakers v8's are nice engines but a bit heavy, so you may need a extra spring or two in your front end set up. they featured timing gears instead of a chain, they have forged cranks. they are short stroke and like to rev. I have a 259 in my 56 pickup. It is a full flow with a spin on oil filter. A 63 and later feature. In adition to the swap meet, there is a Studebaker Packard concours and open car show on Saturday. You might get some stuff and some knowledge by walking the grounds and talking to the Studie guys. The most prevailent manifold I haqve seen is for 2 x 2bbl, but I have seen 3 X 2 set ups also. The neat thing is the later 2bbl manifold can easily be adapted to a 4bbl, as what the factory did was cast one design and then machine it for whichever carb was beig fitted. They are fairly low compression factory so some head milling can be effective in gaining some inexpensive HP. here's mine
Here's my 232 in a 27 coupe. I haven't had much luck finding a tripower for it. Did have a Latham on it for a while, but that was an exercise in futility. If I find the pics of it with the Jimmy on it ,I will post them.
I have a 289 for my model A-30. Last weekend i bought a weiand dragstar 6x2 intake! (MrG***er! Are you the seller?) I have never before seen a 6x2 intake for a stude v8, do someone now how common these were? /Johan
Edmunds and Offy both made Stude intakes.Stu-V was another. The swap at South Bend is pretty good sized and there are always a few intakes for sale.Just tell anyone who asks that you want it for a '56-'61 Hawk. The purists turn all red and explode into small bits when someone wants to use a Stude engine in a different car.For performance stuff talk to Phil at Fairborn Studebaker. He will be at the swapmeet. Here is his online site http://www.fairbornstudebaker.com/
OK, here's the Jimmy. Way over carbed. The blower was driven with three 5/8" belts at 1-1. The big pulleys were used to give enough belt surface to prevent slippage. While it ran ok, it was blind. Couldn't see anything to the right of thre car.
Let me try again. Well some better, but not near as clear as the pic. Anybody know how to lighten the image?
Not "multi-carbed" per se but possibly even more rare. In the early 60's my brother's brother-in-law had an MGTF drag race car that had a hilborn-injected Studebaker in it. This was an impressive, national record-holding car.
My name is Tyler and I have a Studebaker intake problem. 57 ElDorado 3X2 with custom air cleaner StuV 2X2 Sideways (Going in the FED) StuV 2X2 Inline Wiend A bunch of Stromberg WW's with the Backdraft air horn. Take your pick
I don't know how to put pics on yet, but if you want to look at my album you can see my T project with a 289 Stude in it. Sure would like to find some valve covers. chrome or finned. I'll be at South bend this weekend. Just another Studebaker nut..
Here's a nice Studebaker powered Rockne. Studebaker had a factory dual four barrel option engine called the R-3 and R-4, sometimes these manifolds can be found reasonably priced.
in 1957-59 when I was in High school, I put a 259 in my 36 coupe. Ran Very well. in 59, I built a log manifold out of 3" square tubing, and put 4 97's on it. added a 280 **** Hubbard cam. ran good.
My Weiand DragStar 6x2 intake has arrived! Just had to try it! The plan was to use rochester 2jet carbs, but it will be tight. Maby I have to start collecting 94´s or 97´s..
