Did he do the 'bondo' work on this car or did the shop do it then just get Gene to come and paint it???

Amazing guy .... I had the privilege of taking one of his classes a few months ago. It's great to see him lay the paint down on a master .....

I am sure the repair was done before Gene arrived. He was only there for two and a half days and most of that was taken up by painting.

I just returned from Gene's 2 day metal shaping class in Mohave this past weekend. I learned more in the last 2 days than I ever have about metal. We got to look at all the projects at his place from past to present. he is a true master of his craft. Gene rules!

Despite the negative, he is awesome to talk to and see in action!! He is a true legend and nothing will change that! This thread started out talking about him painting and it should stay at that. Great job on the painting Gene!!!! Can't wait to see him again in Indy.

  6. I regret that someone makes the assumption that Gene did the Bondo work. A true icon of the hobby and I hoped that this post would pass without some one bringing that picture up. I think Gene can walk tall and others can suck wind, in my opinion.

  8. Nothing against Gene I truely think he is an icon and one of the nicest guys in the hobby but unless the car had been repainted before which I don't believe it had it was either Gene or one of his guys that did the bondo work.

I think sometimes we tend to put these guys on pedistals that are so high we are just asking for our perceptions of them to be broken. If any other builder had done a car and that picture had been taken he would have been raked over the coals for pages. I think Gene is being shown a great deal of respect in this thread.

I'm always amazed at how clean and perfect Gene's fades are and wondered if he had a trick to get them so nice, but those shots show it is all just freehand with a steady hand. That is a long, long car to get a perfect, even fade all the way down the side.

Two Chop, nice picture you take, did you forget the watermark trademark copyrights on the pictures? Oh well what the heck, its only illegal in forty-nine states, not Michigan?

  22. Gene has done more for this hobby in his lifetime than anyone on this board. He had a thick spot of bondo on what was originally HIS car.get over it and give the man the respect he still deserves

was , is the car straight , and nice? had the accident not happened do you think the mud would have cracked? probly not.... yeah coles work is fantastic, but not everyone has endless pockets. i doubt gene does if he did he wouldnt be hustling work more than people a 3rd his age. ive redone or worked on customs here with bondo thicker than that that have been on the road 30 years and still look good. further more the guy has knocked out about 200 awesome customs in his carreer. you cant spend forever making everyone so perfect. how many have you built?? for christsakes give it a rest.. why do you guys have to ruin every goddamn thing? fuckin sick of it!!!

  24. They were called lead sleds, well Bondo was easier and quicker to work with. TONS of Kustoms running around with it. Glassguy and John have it right almost every Kustom has some mud on it!!! GENE RULES!!!! I hope I am still at it when I am his age

I agree, the car is straight, the mud would still be there if a pole hadn't slamed into it.I was asked to help on this car, but was to buzy at my own shop, so I looked at the car before it was fixed, and its not perfect but how long ago was it built? Most custom cars you see have lots of filler in them, the bare metal car you see on tv & in pics are not painted like that, they get filler too. Those of us in the buisness know the reality. There is nothing wrong with bondo, if you want a car that is all metal worked & lead you have to spend big bucks, And they "pop" too (sometimes faster)

Imagine the confidence it must take to walk into a paint booth to do that.

The guy is just incredible. His shop is just down the road. He's a vegetarian too. Maybe that has something to do with it. If you get a chance, take his metal shaping class some weekend.
