SBC Intake and Carb combo???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by belairbubble, May 2, 2010.

  1. I currently am running a 76' era 350 in my 1961 Belair 2dr hardtop. Although now I am planning on switching up my carb and intake to wake the car up a little.

Currently the engine is a mainly stock 350 4-bolt mains motor with a mild (mystery) cam, long tube 1 5/8 primary headers, short gl***pack exhaust with cutouts, HEI, stock intake, Q-jet carb and double roller timing chain. The car has 3:36 gears, TH350 trans with stock converter. I recently purchased an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake at a swap meet for a great deal and have not installed it yet. I plan to run this with a new Edelbrock 600cfm carb. This car is only going to be run on the street.

Question is will this intake and carb combo upgrade be overkill for the motor as this edelbrock performer RPM intake appeals to the 1500-6500 rpm range??? Will this intake and carb combo work well together??? I have heard mixed reviews and was wondering if anyone else can offer me advise before I do anything.

Thanks in advance for any of your advice!

Thats what i have on my 56 283 chevy engine with a t35o, Performer intake with a 600cfm carb in my 53 ford. It runs so amzingly smooth compaired to the rochester carb that i wouldnt even double think it. But to answer your question, it doesnt over kill mine, as long as your arent reving it up hard, you have nothing to really worry about. :D
i say go for it! iv got nothing but good thigs to say about that combo. :D

The intake RULES!!!... As for the carb??? I'd go with a 600 or 650 Holley.. Then again, That's just me.. I love Holley carbs! :D

Around here there seems to be a lot of those Performer 600 cfm carbs come up for sale because they don't seem to get the job done on stout engines. Great for milder or smaller engines though.

If your qjet is in good shape, I'd change manifolds and put that carb back on and see if the difference in performance is what you want and then think carb upgrades.

Just like Deuces I am a Holley fan because I can get them to work for me but I still say go one step at a time on this.

I just put a 600 Edelbrock on my dads 65 Impala 300 hp 327, took off the original rebuilt several times carter. Runs excellent, keeps a tune. Holleys can be a pain in the *** if you only drive occasionally. I run them on my stuff but dont mind tuning them.

Qjet is great for driving around, you need to get an older non smogger though, '76 Im not sure.

Great intake! You will be very happy with that combo. It will also leave room for more performance if you deside on making other up grades later also.

600 to 650 is right inline with what you are looking for ,performance wise. Whether you go with a Edelbrock ,Holley or whatever carb choice you make . Since you already have the Edelbrock use it.

OH NO! NOT THAT CARB. !

Great manifold, terrible carb. Typically they work fine for a year when bought new then turn to ****. I gave mine away. Go with a Holley.

Good combo. Different set of rules than a Holley. No power valve to blow. You can tune it without dumping fuel all over your motor. Sensitive to fuel pressure and debris in the fuel. Good match to your cam and headers.

It will probably work for awhile; although not nearly so well as the stock Q-Jet.

The Q-Jet, if properly rebuilt, will outperform the eclone in driveability, power, mileage, and especially reliability. The only area where the eclone will outperform the Q-Jet is possibly looks (and that is subjective).

As much as I like Carters and Edelbrocks you are giving up one of the all time great carbs. The Quadrajet is my all time favorite street carb. Do yourself a favor and just keep the Quadrajet but upgrade the manifold.

I think that has more to do with people not knowing how to tune them than anything with the carb.

Yep... well except for the reliability part, I find them to be fine in that department.

  14. Thanks for all of the information guys!!! Im glad the intake I bought will be a good unit for my engine. I have not purchased the carb yet which I plan on doing this week. Although now im not sure which brand of carb to run since there are many good arguments to be had for each one. I do like the aftermarket carburetors over the stock Q-jet even though those can be proven to perform well. I was just attracted to the other features relating to easy tuning, no power valve blowout and reliability the edelbrocks or holleys have.

Now for the compe***ion between Holleys or Edelbrocks to continue so I can use the info towards purchasing one of these this week. I am very aware of this being a touchy subject and appreciate all of your comments!!!

    Thanks again guys

My El Camino runs a '76 truck 350 with a Edelbrock Performer and a Quadrajet. Its smooth as silk.

We have a '79 Chevy truck with a 350 and a Edelbrock Performer with a Quadrajet, also very smooth and great torque.

The 307 I'm building for the '54 F-100 has a Performer and Quadrajet on it as well. I think its a nice combination.

These guys are all talking about an Edelbrock PERFORMER manifold. You said you bought a Performer RPM. They are not the same manifold, and I think you'll be a lot happier on the street with a Performer - they are intended for low-to-mid RPM range performance. I think you'll see better stoplight driving and gas mileage with the Performer, and unless you're hitting the drag strips on the weekend the slight gains the RPM MIGHT give you in the upper end of the RPMs won't ever matter.
I have a Performer and 600cfm Edelbrock on the 1978 350 in my '53 Chevy with stock converter and 3.42 rear end and I have never regretted it. Excellent low end pull.

  17. Well thanks guys I actually took all your advice and traded the RPM intake straight up for a Performer intake. I ended up with the 600 cfm edelbrock carb only because i got a mad deal on one. This combo is now awesome on the car and I am very happy with it on the street.
