Hey So I have a 170 inline 6 in my 63 comet, I know what your thinking, total powerhouse, but really I wanted some advice on making it a little faster (rodding it out) So far My plan is to do a better performance cam, boring out the intake, and porting the head then finally doing the rear gears, does this sound about right to some of you Ol' Timers? I really want to find a 200ci head to put on then do the rest, Are there any problems doing this (200 head on a 170 block) Same block isnt it? well any help is appreciated, I wanna do it relatively cheap too (Young college kid here) so those $1700 heads from fordsix not really happening. So yea any tips, help, advice or someone selling a cheap rebuildable head or nicely price rebuilt would be great Thanks! -Julio
yup. but i have heard of people milling the head down . Im not sure exactly why. maybe they flow better but I dont know
A 200 inch motor is a great upgrade. Seven main bearings, better performance all around, and externally just about identical. Available cheap practiacally everywhere. You could build a motor to whatever degree of insanity you need, then drop it in over a weekend.
You could also just swap in a running 200 as a lot of people building retromod Mustangs pull them out and sell them for cheap. If you're going to build up the engine you might want to consider swapping out the rear end (Maverick or Mustang could be donors for these.) If you're going to do that you should swap out to five lug wheels at the same time... and it just keeps going and going - ask me how I know. Be sure to check out Fordsix.com.
yep the comet i just bought has a knockin 170. im huntin down a runin 200 to drop in! 200's run forever and ever!!
I'd agree with the 200 swap option - v. cheap HP and you could easily build from there, should your budget allow.
