Heads up for the East Coasters Picked up the Raceway news at my local YMCA of all places yesterday and while thumbing thru I see an Ad for DIGS AT E'TOWN. This looks like a copy of last years Motor City Speedway with 1/8 mile drags, music and even boasting the "Infamous RP Barn/Garage" Dates are Saturdays 6/5, 7/3, 8/7, 9/4 from 5 to 10pm. Not sure if any of the Motor City folks have a hand in it this but I hope it keeps with the same theme as last year.
Very cool, I had a lot of fun last year! Monthly meets will hopefully prevent attendance burn out. I'll definitely be there
Another awesome thing Mel started and someone else ran away with. I wonder what the scoop is and what it'll be like.
That's what I was thinking, too. Now the cool will be gone and money making for the track taking over.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...I smell promoters. They smell just like.... Motor Speedway was cool. This? well....................................I guess we'll see. Actually...I probably won't.
For reasons of his own, Mel decided not to continue. Motor Speedway was a great idea and I believe that there are more reasons to revive it than to kill it! You can read what you like into it but no one "stole" it from Mel and kicked him out. Like I said, it was Mel's decision to not continue. I believe that the concept has great potential, so I asked if I could bring it back. I also run the Nostalgia Summernationals and Funny Car Reunion so I do have some experience with the kind of cars and events that we all love. Will it be as cool as last year? Will it be even bigger, better, and more fun? We won't know until we get there. So instead of shittin' on it before it gets off the ground give it a shot. Walter Frey P.S. I'll be looking for some H.A.M.B. friendly hot rods and kustoms for display soon. So stay tuned!
Obviously everyone knows but just to confirm, this has nothing to do with Mel or the OILERS anymore. Stay tuned for some more big events from our club at some point this summer including something special in early june. ~M~
O.k., O.k., ya know what, I'll leave what I wrote, because well...that's was exactly what I felt when I read this thread initially, so, there's that...but, ...I hope I'm wrong...hell, I LOVE The Funny Car Reunion...I enjoy it to high heaven, so, I'll concede that "The Digs", having not actually happened yet, may just pull out some good folks and cool cars...but, just btwn. you and me, lets just say I've seen a couple NHRA tracks, in a couple different states, "take over the wheel", so to speak, once all the handling issues were scienced out, if ya get my drift...I hope this wasn't the case. So, my skepticism, is not just pipe smoke...it IS based on some actual past events...shady ones. I also hope somebody preps that eighth, too! It was, and is, a concept with great potential...
I'm with 6t5frlane on this. I had a great time last year and will check it out this year. Also looking forward to seeing what Mel comes up with. Things are looking up for a very interesting summer.
The more events the merrier! I'll still be a spectator this year but plan on doing plenty of bench racing, picking everyones brain and gathering ideas for my build and just having a good old time. Looking forward to some good weather and getting out of the house!
i,ll grive it a shot and wait and see what mel and the oiler,s due this year they did a great job last year it was a lot of fun
I can tell you, If your planning on going to these events and catching the same vibe and excitement, your not gonna find it. The barn was full of all OILERS goods. We stripped it clean yesterday. All your gonna find there is an empty shed!!!
Mel's gig was really cool while it lasted . I remember lookin around one night and wondering how so much fun could even be legal...... kind of place you tell your grandkids about when your sitting in the hot rodder's old age home. I'm glad I can say "I was there" ! .
I'll let you all know the truth soon.... but i"m waiting on my money they owe me.... just waiting, being a good boy! Someone justt forwared this too me... I was trying to avoid.
Was just rereading thru my original thread and I realized I was not clear on my above post. I started it as a question if somethign had changed. In the above quoted post I was replying to jetmeks post that Mel and the Oilers have somethgin in the works and were no longer involved. It almost sounds like I was supporting the new Digs at Etown but heard they were no longer involved. Once I found out this venue changed hands and the soul of the event would be different I lost interest of going back. Thru Mel and the Oilers I was enlightened to the world of Traditional HotRods and that they were not the same as the dreaded R**Rods. I am forever hooked, to traditional rods, and slowly working towards building my own. To the folks that worked so hard to put last year together, answered all my questions and helped me aquire parts and knowledge thank you and I am with you and not to some coporate take over wanna be version of someone elses great idea. TBone
Motor speedway r.i.p., Oilers keep us posted. p.s. raceway park let me know if the barn is ever for sale.
Uh.... Not for nuthin' (as we say in my neighborhood) but Motor Speedway and what we are doing this year are not the same thing. I love traditional hot rods and customs but we are not going to limit our events to "period correct" cars and bikes only. We will, however, restrict entries to pre '65 Detroit iron. No late models, no imports, no metric bikes, no modern, purpose built race cars or bracket racers. This is for home built hot rods and street freaks, sort of a kicked up cruise night for those that rarely race their cars or may have never raced their cars. In other words, we are not gonna make anyone feel small for not building their car to someone else's standards. We will also be awarding trophies and special awards throughout the evening. Yes, the barn will be open! We have been adding our own "junk" over the last few weeks. Cute girls and cold beer.......what decor??? WF
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44274 Read This First! The HAMB is dedicated to spreading the gospel of traditional hot rods and kustoms to hoodlums world wide. That’s right – TRADITIONAL. And we aren’t talking Beach Boys and poodle skirts here fellas. If you are into a-side 50’s pop, lawn chairs, ruler contests, and all things that make hot rodding warm and cozy then you might want to find another message board. If you aren’t sure what we mean by “traditional”, then you might think twice as well.
