Before I set out.. NO *****ING ABOUT ME PAINTING FAYE PINK. That being said.. I've narrowed it down to two pinks. The are both Oldsmobile colors, from a 1957 Starfire. One is called Desert Glow and the other is called Sunset Glow. I just bought paint chips on e-bay so I can compare them in natural light and decide. The question I have is, when I get to the ordering paint part, how do I get factory colors? Do I use the original paint code or is there some sort of conversion? Any and all help is appreciated. Stacey
On a color that old, you may not find a store with the correct formulas, but they can computer match it pretty close. I just had this done for an old Studebaker color. PPG also has some color books that may have a later color that is a close match if you have a chip. I know there is one that is real close to Desert glow, maybe just a shade darker.
There are Lazer scanners now which will generate the correct formula from your paint chip. Pink is good.
Any paint shop worth a damn can match your chip just by eye'n it! Some run the codes that cross with new codes and some have fancy computers that do it for them!!
COOL! thanks for the answers. I think the chips will arrive by the end of the week and then I can start comparing. Stacey
I have a HOK paint book that you can borrow if it helps in your search. You'll have to overlook the drool on the metalflake page, however.
Stacey, Earl Schieb here on the HAMB has all the colors and the codes in books. The shelf he has the setup on must be 8 foot long. I saw both the colors you are referring to last weekend as I was also checking out the 50's and 60's Oldsmobile colors. I probley spent a couple of hours total looking through his books. I picked out a couple of colors, he popped those codes into a computer program and it then told him exactly how much of each color to add. I must tell you, the one he mixed by using the exact formula was very close but the one he mixed by just an educated guess was spot on the money. PM him, I know he would love to help you with your PINK color choice. BTW; I can't wait for you to see Big Olds. I know YOUR going to love him, and his interior
i did a test panel with silver HOK flake and Magenta HOK Kandy over it and its friggin awesome gonna paint my 64 caddy convertible that color yeah poke fun go ahead.... but im secure enough to drive a pink caddy... elvis was too...
I painted my girlfriend's old Lebaron with a real nice shade of Pink Pearl, and Candy Burgundy. I think I still have the formula (maybe even some of the old paint) that I concocted from House of Kolor materials. Pale pink, not hot pink, though. Subtle color, not outrageous.
Borrow that HOK paint chip book. There's some kandy pinks in there that blow production 50's colors away.
i've heard that the HOK pinks are "show only" that they fade super quick if exposed to the elements they look incredible though
did you ever consider the "FEM" shade of pink used on the tri color scheme[pink black and creme] on the 1956 Dodges? Also the "CORAL CAY"-That was used with the charcoal on the 55 chevys [2 tone]- was cool... Any PPG dealer can match the old colors up in a Urethane for nowadays dependability instead of the Chalky old Alkalyd formulas that were used back then...........
Yea, What I'm looking for is something really soft and pale, think cotton candy. Not too orangey/peachy/salmony... Definitely a blue-based pink.I'm not thinking anything metallic, I tend to prefer creamy colors over metallics. Anyway, I'm gonna keep looking at other stuff and I'm sure if these paint chips aren't what I was hoping for, I can use all the wonderful suggestions above to find that perfect color. Anyway, THANKS.
Good info in this thread. Don't worry Stacy, I drive a pink '57 Pontiac Chieftain. If anyone flips me ****, I also cite Elvis driving a pink Caddy, and John Lee ******. And Wayne Kramer rocks a pimp daddy pink suit when he plays live. I know that Pontiac had two shades in '57, as well. The salmon pink , and coral pink, like mine. Good luck on that new paint job!
find a body shop or supplier that has sikkens paint, they have the largest paint chip book in the world prolly 3-4 pages of just pinks and they are wonderfull colors from bright to pastel . worth a good look , I use sikkens at my shop and we can mix or create any color and it has helped our shop grow in the area. very good product
Coolness! Faye will be rockin' Nick Lowe style! (Pinker & Prouder Than Previous! ) I was actually considering a shade of pink for the bucket today...talking about the red I wanted with the guy at the paint store kinda got me thinking about alternatives, and pink was the first thing that came to mind. We buy automotive paints from a local place that can mix any color, stock or custom. The guys really know their products, and it's amazing how much thought you gotta put into painting a car! (I never painted one with anything other than rattle cans before!). The dude said making a sweet metallic pink would be easy...and deffinately not something that anyone else would likely be sportin' on THEIR ride come cruise night! I may go that way yet! THINK PINK!
[ QUOTE ] I won't give ya a hard time.... I know of a certain shade of pink that most guys like [/ QUOTE ] I wasn't gonna' go there, but that's another reason I tell the bro's I like pink. Damn, those Oldmobile colors are sweeeeet.
Pink cars are cool. No one will give you a hard time about it, in fact, guys will flip over backwards to meet a girl driving a pink car. I have the HOK book. You know, just for pleasure reading. I am remodelling my kitchen, and I salvaged a 1953 kitchen from a local house and the cabinets (original condition) are pink and gray. Good luck in your search.
[ QUOTE ] Sunset Glow Desert Glow (car is painted the correct very rare color "desert glow" (code 65).) [/ QUOTE ] PURRRFECT! Exactly what I had in mind... Stacey
ok with all the paint guys on here i can't believe they only got you half way there. here's what you want.... borrow that HOK book. in there you will find a section of the hok "perfect pastels". these are pastels that work kinda like a candy. it is a 3 stage paint. and i'm gonna tell you how to cheat at it. with any HOK you need to lay down a sealer(with anything if your smart). here's where you cheat. use the hok koseal white as your sealer and a base. just shoot on another coupla coats instead of using a seperate white base. then this is how these colors work like a candy. it is a semi transparent coat and basiclly the more you spray the darker it will get just like a candy. the color chip in the book is over a white base and is 3 coats of the color. that said if you want it lighter spray 2 coats darker 4 or more until you get the exact color you want then clear as normal. with pastels i think it's also kind of fun to throw a little pearl in with the first couple coats of clear to give it a nice shimmer. i've had the desire to do something in a pastel and say like your car in pink shoot the whole thing to the pink you want. first 2 coats of clear mix in a bit of a lighter pearl silver maybe just a little for glow. now reverse that lightening glow from the silver by highlighting some body lines by fogging on say a little pink pearl to darken those areas. then clear the hell out of it. sounds like fun to me and i bet no one would have a word to say about your pink car. i always did like pink cars...ken....
PPG has a corporate color library with a toll free number (in Cleveland or Cincinnati, I think). They have color books going back to the beginning of time. Just give them the the year, make, and color, and they can usually give you a mix in any of their current paints. I haven't used their service in a few years, so I ***ume it is still around. Sorry, I don't have the number, though. Dave
Gosh...both colors are really pretty, especially the Desert Glow. I will join in with all of the other pro-pink people...my dad just painted his 56 Caddy black & pink & it looks awesome. The original pink on it was kind of a peachy-pink chalky color...he ended up going with a blue-based medium pink with a slight lavendar undertone...looks really neat at dusk...kind of "morphs" colors. Well anyway, good luck & please be sure and post pics when Fay gets her new coat of paint!
I myself am partial to this one... Or Mopar Panther Pink... Cool, different, choice. Oh yeah, there's always Mary Kay pink too. Jay
