I just got a 1972 C4 Transmission (for my Shoebox Ford) that I want to have rebuilt

*Question - A friend can get me a "rebuild" kit at cost. What is fair price a mechanic should charge me to rebuild it, if i suppply the kit?

*How many hours does it take to rebuild one?

    Thanks

Your probally better of just having them buy the parts and doing the rebuild that way you will have a waranty. Price wise will depend on what parts are bad. Are you replacing the converter to?

    So tell us how.

  5. Friend here (a transmission pro) charges me $100 to ***emble a transmission plus parts.

I take it apart and clean the components. He inspects everything which is important. Used transmissions always need something that is not in the rebuild kit.

I've always been able to find a shop that'll take a loose transmission and rebuild it for me. Look for an older shop, not one of the big name shops.

i think you should be able to find someone to pull it apart and fix anything that is bad for under $400.unless you want to change the valveboby or go to a trans-brake.the guy that did my ****** only charged me $900 for my turbo-400 and that was with the brake, converter and a whole lot of bigger and stronger parts that would hold up to the 4700 rpm launches.

The C-4 is an insanely simple transmission. Buy the book off ebay [or video] and do it yourself.

C-4 is a simple trans BUT one cant get the valvebody too clean. always replace converter and be very clean with valvebody.

You should be able to get it rebuilt for about $500-$800 on the bench including the parts w/ a warranty and converter. Most good shops will want to use their own parts supplier.
